An iconic song from 1965 – absoute gem, absolutely unforgettable. “Kaanton Se Kheench Ke Ye Aanchal. . . Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai” from the 1965 film ‘Guide’. Created by the greats of that era – Shailendra, SD Burman and Lata Mangeshkar. And coming from a film directed by Vijay Anand, one is assured that the picturization would be superlative, which it surely is. The song continues to sustain its beauty even after more than five decades. It is such a genuine treat both visually and aurally.

8th December is the 75th birthday of Rinku or Begum Ayesha Sultana Khan who also is known by the name Sharmila Tagore. What was not known is that she was born in Hyderabad. (I didn’t know, the stalwarts of the blog may be aware). She looked so delicate and fragile in “Kashmir Ki Kali” (1964) – her Hindi debut, having debuted in Bengali in 1959 through Satyajit Ray’s “Apur Sansar”; the need to protect her from Pran must have come naturally to Shammi Kapoor. She has a super-sweet smile too with deeeep dimples that form whenever she smiles. It was not as if she excelled only in glamourous baby-doll type of roles; she was comfortable even when she played the roles of mother and daughter – Chanda/ Kajri- in Gulzar’s “Mausam” (1975). 1975 saw her in five movies “Mausam”, “Chupke Chupke”, “Faraar”, “Amanush”, “Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka” and the character she played in each of them were completely different from each other.

Welcome all, to this post which is another of those posts of mine that was planned way back (in February 2019, to be precise)when I presented a song from the 1977 movie ‘Paapi’.
Music for this movie ‘Paapi-1977’ was composed by Bappi Lahiri. Though I had not watched this movie ‘Paapi-1977’, I liked the song that I then presented. Today’s song, also by Bappi Lahiri, came up in the list of suggestions that appeared in ‘YouTube’ with that song.

Welcome all to this post which comes after a long gap. I call it a ‘Long gap’ because this post was conceived by me ‘long back’ like many other posts of mine which remained unfinished aften getting started due to various reasons.
My last post on the blog was on 20th November. It was posted when I going through some health-related issues. I had to visit a Hospital in Nairobi, which is around 125 kms from my base station. Since some tests were to be conducted, I had to stay in Nairobi for four days. I stayed with colleagues working there in the Head Office. That didn’t allow me to concentrate on posts though I continued listening to music and watching songs. I even kept reminding our authors about movies that were falling under the ‘blog-ten-year challenge’.

‘Aalor Pipasa’ (Thirst for Light) was a Bangla film released in January 1965. The film was directed by Tarun Majumdar. The film is available on-line with English sub-titles. The story of the film is about a courtesan (Sandhya Roy) who sacrifices her life for the betterment of her son. The entire story is depicted in the film by way of flash back when a senior doctor (Pahadi Sanyal) tells the story of the courtesan to his junior doctor (Asit Baran). The junior doctor happens to be the courtesan’s son.

Today (18 november 2019) is thr 118th birth anniversary of V Shantaram (18 november 1901- 30 october 1990).
When one looks at the career of V Shantaram, one can only be amazed. He made his debut as an actor in 1921 in a silent movie “Surekha Haran”(1921). His last movie was as a director in “Jhanjhaar”(1987).
