This is Gulzar !
— KITAABEN —
Kitaaben jhaankti hain band almaari ke sheeshon se
badi hasrat se takti hain
mahinon ab mulaqaaten nahin hotin
jo shaamen unn ki sohbat mein kata karti thhin, ab aksar
guzar jaati hain computer ke pardon par
badi bechain rehti hain kitaaben
unhen ab neend mein chalne ki ‘aadat ho gayi hai
badi hasrat se takti hain
jo qadren wo sunaati thhin
ke jin ke cell kabhi marte nahin thhe
wo qadren ab nazar aati nahin ghar mein
jo rishte wo sunaati thhin
wo saare udhde udhde hain
koyi safha palat-ta hoon to ik siski nikalti hai
kayi lafzon ke ma’ani gir pade hain
bina patton ke sukhe tund lagte hain vo alfaaz
jhapki guzarti hai
bahut kuchh tah-ba-tah khultaa chalaa jaata hai parde par
kitaabon se jo zaati raabta thha kat gayaa hai
kabhi seene pe rakh ke let jaate thhe
kabhi godi mein lete thhe
kabhi ghutnon ko apne rehal ki soorat bana kar
neem sajde mein padha karte thhe, chhute thhe jabeen se
wo saara ilm to milta rahegaa ‘aayinda bhi
magar wo jo kitaabon mein milaa karte thhe sookhe phool aur
mehke huey ruq’ae
kitaaben maangne, girne utthaane ke bahane rishte bante thhe
unn ka kya hogaa
wo shayad ab nahin honge !
—– GULZAR
I think the above poem is enough as introduction and ta’aruf of Gulzar Sahab.
Faced with such ‘qalaam’, what does it matter when and where he was born. Yes, Gulzar sahab has turned 86 today. May he live to be 186 or more, as long as he creates such ‘naayab nageene’ as nazmen and naghme.

Today’s song is from film Patrani-1956. It was a Prakash Pictures’ film, produced by Shankarbhai Bhatt-the elder brother and directed by Vijay Bhatt, the younger brother. The music was by Shankar-Jaikishen (S-J). Songs were written by Shailendra (9) and Hasrat Jaipuri (1).
In my last post, I had talked about songs from the 50’s decade, especially songs from Shankar-Jaikishen films of this decade. I was determined to discuss such songs from Shankar-Jaikishen in the 50’s, so I started scanning each of their films made in the 50s. From 1951 to 1960, Shankar-Jaikishen gave music in a total of 41 films. First, I made a list and then revised it to an alphabetical list. That way, it would be easier for me to check songs from every film, from the Blog’s ” List of songs-moviewise”. Before starting, I went through the list once again and my heart sank. Looking at the titles of the films, I was afraid that most films must have already been ‘ Yippied ‘.

Hullo Atuldom
Today’s post is because of this song. This song reminded me how amused I used to be whenever I saw it.
Atulji has mentioned the starcast of “Tohfa”, the movie of which the above song is. He has mentioned that he felt the props comprising of saris was imaginative. If he had seen the movie he would have understood the reason for the ‘Sari’ prop. I am sure there will be some followers of the blog who have not seen the movie and definitely some followers would have seen. They will remember that in the scene preceding the song Jeetendra has gifted Jaya Prada a decent looking sari as he is appreciative of her way of taking care of his mother in his absence. She is in awe of him and when his mother asks her if she would like to be her daughter-in-law she fantasizes the song. Like I mentioned to my mother “ek saree mila toh itne saree khwaab mein aa gaye”; how typical!!!! (I had wanted to write all this in the comments that day, but reserved it for this post)

Rehnuma, starring Rehana Sultan and Vinod Mehra, is an uncompleted movie of the early 1970s. I haven’t been able to find any more details about it on the Internet, and would request knowledgeable Atulites to throw some light on it.
In 1972, Madan Mohan recorded four songs for this film penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri, but the movie got shelved for some reason … and the songs were just lost. But later they were found on his tapes after his demise and released by his family on a rare LP … and were included in the album Tere Bagair released by YRF Music.

That is how Balraj Sahni left his mark as an outstanding method actor in most of his nearly 100 films in which he acted during the course of his 27 years of filmy career. Balraj Sahni started his filmy career as an actor almost at the same time as Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor, the trinity of the golden period of Hindi film industry. But he had to struggle hard to establish himself as an actor in demand. It took him more than a decade to do so while his compatriot trinity had become the stars in early 1950s.

I cut my HFM teeth in late 1960s when old order was giving way to new. Old order meant Rafi as the male playback singer of choice, Shammi Kapoor as the heart throb, and Shankar Jaikishan as the music directors of choice for big banners. In a matter of a few years or so, the musical order was turned upside down. When the dus settled, we found Shammi Kapoor being replaced by Rajesh Khanna, Rafi by Kishore Kumar and Shankar Jaikishan by R D Burman.
I became a young music lover sometime in mid to late 1960s. From being used to Rafi voice blaring from loudspeakers, I found a new male voice beginning to blare out of loudspeakers. Alongwith rest of the population, I too was mesmerised by this voice. The very first time I listened to the voice of Kishore Kumar, i loved it. the song was the iconic “Padosan”(1968) song-“mere saamne waali khidki”.
