In the late 50s and early 60s when I got interested in Hindi film songs, I used to identify the popular songs only with the playback singers who had rendered them. It never came to my mind that I should also know as to who wrote the lyrics and who composed the music for the songs. In the next stage of my interest in Hindi film songs, I was keen to know as to who composed the music for the songs that I liked very much. It was only when I heard some of the songs from films such as ‘Pyaasa’ (1957), ‘Kaaghaz Ke Phool’ (1959), ‘Anaadi’ (1959), ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’ (1960) etc, I felt that need to know as to who wrote the lyrics of the songs as well.

This was the heading of a full page advertisement issued by the producer G A Thakur, the owner of Girdhar Bahar Productions in October 1945 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine. He was announcing his intention of producing ‘Rehana’ (1946), the story of which is based on the Middle-East background. It would be an interesting exercise, to do a series of songs, wherein one song is introduced through another song. So many times it happens, a song starts to play, and the mind automatically thinks of another song that expresses similar emotions. I am sure we will be able to list numerous such pairs. There is after all, only so many emotions that the human mind plays with. It is the poet’s mind that will express the same thought in a huge variety of combinations of words.

Never before I had to piece together so little information from so many sources about a song that I liked so much as in case of “Ut’re jo zindagi teri gehraaiyon men hum” from Pratibha (1984).

As I continue to search for songs for this series, I continue to keep getting surprises. I keep uncovering uncommonly wonderful gems that either I have not heard before, or keep bumping into songs that are memories from long ago, but not heard for a long time. Today’s song is one that I am encountering for the first time. Searching for a good song starting with today’s alphabet, as I was trawling through the folders of Rafi Sb songs on my hard disk, I found this gem a few days ago. A gem that I had not heard before. The year is 1966. This song should have been in memory banks from radio listening days. But no, I do not recall having heard it before.

Asha ji, one of the leading lady playback singers in Indian cinema, turns 83 today. Seventy of thes 83 years have been spent in an active career, probably the longest such accomplishment by a playback singer. As Sadanand ji indicates in his article (the one before this), he states that she is currently on a concert tour of US. This speaks of the energy and the verve of this personality.
