Here is a another duet, which is rare in the sense few people might have heard it. It is from a film called “Fariyaad” (1964). A few songs from this film are posted in the blog. This music of this film is composed by Snehal Bhatkar, and this song is written by Kedar Sharma. As I see in the list of songs moviewise three songs are already posted. So this is the fourth song to be posted. Another duet “Apne huzoor mujhe kya se kya banaa diyaa” was posted a few days ago (Post by Sadanand Kamathji).

I had posted a write up on Jab tak duniya rahi rahegi from the film YE DIL KISO DOON (1963) ON March 26, 2012. Actually, I had short-listed ‘ hamen dam daike’ from this film, sung by Mubarak Begum and Asha Bhonsle for discussion but at the last moment, I chose the first one as I was influenced by the presence of a charming Shashi Kapoor and the impressive use of lighting during the picturisation of the song. I watched once again the video clip of the second song and felt that this song should also be brought for discussion in this blog. I was getting a feeling that my action of dropping Mubarak Begum’s song was akin to the Hindi film industry’s treatment to Mubarak Begum during her singing career. So to make amends, here is this Mubarak Begum-Asha Bhonsle duet song for discussion.

“Qawwali Ki Raat” (1964) is a Durgesh Productions movie. It was directed by Durgesh Kumar and Santosh. This movie, which was clearly inspired from “Barsaat Ki Raat” has some lovely songs in it, which are great to listen to, even though the movie itself was a B grade movie with only small time actors in it, viz. Aruna Irani, Kamaljeet, Kumkum, Mumtaz, Deven Verma, Mohan Choti, Jagdeep, Murad etc in it.

Sajjad Hussain composed only about 100 songs in his entire career lasting more than three decades. When I went through the list of his songs, I discovered some interesting facts. Though he composed very few songs, he worked with a disproportionally large number of singers and artists in these songs. In all, he worked with over 25 singers and over 25 lyricists in these songs that add up to just about 100 !

This is another lovely ghazal rendered by Mubarak Begum. As I continue to search for her songs that I have heard before, I also keep running into songs that I have never heard before, and they are simply wonderful. This one I had heard before, decades ago, and have been searching for it for some time. Nowadays it seems that anything that is available as an audio or video recording, it will surface eventually on YouTube, so I keep trawling through this immense storehouse. Eventually I am able to locate this ghazal on YouTube. Only the audio is available, yet a relief that it is there.
