According to some surveys, about 90 percent of the Indian marriages are still the outcome of arranged alliances. While the parents/elders are involved in the process of the selection of alliances, the ultimate decision are supposed to be left to boys/girls. But in reality, in most cases, under the pressure from the parents/elders, the boys/girls will not go against the selection of alliance by their parents/elders.  In such cases, some newly married couples may soon realize that they are not in love with their spouses after the marriage for variety of reasons. But they continue to live together as the divorce is not a pleasant option. In some cases, over a period of time, a feeling of mutual care and trust set in the married couples.  This is broadly the main theme of the film ‘Dam Laga Ke Haisha’ (2015).

Music of Uttam Singh / Music Composer – Uttam Singh – 03
——————————————–

This series on the songs composed by music composer Uttam Singh has been going on for some time. Today I present an ‘epic song’ composed by him from the movie ‘Gadar Ek Premkatha-2001’.

Today we know Uttam Singh as a successful and famous ‘music-composer’, who composed songs for movies like ‘Dil To Paagal Hai’, ‘Gadar Ek Premkatha’ etc. But I doubt how many of us know about his initial struggles and his ‘inspirational story’ of ‘struggles to successes’. (Even I was not aware of his full biographical information till recently).

Hullo Atuldom

‘Sindoor’ (1987) was a movie produced by A Krishnamurti & directed by K Ravi Shankar. The movie starred Shashi Kapoor, Jaya Prada, Govinda, Neelam, Kadar Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Aruna Irani, Asrani, Baby Guddu (the pet child actor of those times), AK Hangal, Prem Chopra (if my memory is correct Prem Chopra was in a double role), & Ramesh Deo. It’s been a while since I wrote an article for this blog (a long while – the last thing I wrote was “Ae Watan Ae Watan” in 2019). This week at Arunji’s home (2 June 2023), Sudhir ji encouraged me to write again, following in the footsteps of my mother who has been contributing for years. The conversations that day were incredibly stimulating, particularly the appreciation expressed for the blog among movie trivia enthusiasts. Eventually, I succumbed to the peer pressure. I returned home and embarked on a search for inspiration (aka a song) to write about. It was then that I realized Ameesha Patel’s birthday was approaching, and I immediately got to work.

A R Rahman – The Musician of 21st Century – 6
—————————————————————-

This is post number 06 in the series. As musicians go, ARR is a complete package. He is also much more than a musician, has proved to be media savvy as well as a successful businessperson. He is the first of Indian film music directors to own his music. Previously all film music was owned by films producers/distributors or the music companies, who released records/cassettes/discs etc. The same system prevails in the industry. Only ARR is one who is different. In this regard too ARR is a trend setter. Lata Mangeshkar could think of only royalty and here we have a 90’s kid on the block, who aimed to own the world, at least his portion of it.

hum mehnatkash iss duniya se
jab apna hissa mangenge
ik baag nahin, ek khet nahin
ham saari duniyaa maangenge

There may be others who are following the same path, I don’t know. His growth in all the above, has been exponential and blessed. Some of the singers introduced by ARR have also matured and achieved great heights in their singing career.

The song I am presenting this time is from the film ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ (2002) which surfaced in the memory while doing the earlier post of the same song from the 1963 film ‘Shaheed Bhagat Singh’ – “Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna Ab Hamaare Dil Mein Hai“.
