After the holy month of shraavan, Ganesh Utsav, Eid and other regional festivals it is time for celebration of another big festival all over the country.

It is time for Mahaalayaa. From tomorrow onwards, nine day long or ten day long nav-durgaa festival will commence all over India. In the state of Gujarat where I have been residing for last twenty-one years, people take ‘pad yaatraas’ (walking on foot) during this festival and offer their prayers to the Goddess Ambe (Amba jee), Chamunda Devee (Chotila), Kalika Maataa (Pavagadh) and many other shrines.

This drama of puppy love, completely fresh faces (almost, Rishi Kapoor had already made his mark in the ‘child RK’ role in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970)), and a love story aimed at an age bracket lower than college going young people – the lovers in this film are just transitioning from high school to college. In the early 1970s, the influence of the hippie movement and free love ideas from the west into the Indian society was still a compelling influence. And the provocative presentation, as is the wont of RK style, ensured that young people of all ages went to see this film multiple times in the theaters.
