Blog Day : 3898 Post No. : 14946

Little earlier in the day, Atul ji mentioned about the timing of posting of Holi songs, and I quote,

Different festivals remain topical for different duration of time. If we do not post a write up within this time then the post loses its relevance. In case of Holi, it is the first half of the day mostly when people are mostly in festive mood, though it spills over to the afternoon as well.

As I am rushing to complete this post, it is already around 6 pm. Yes, the festivities for the day have been over for some time. Mostly the people have cleaned up and many would have had their afternoon siestas too. Maybe the only remaining sign of the festivities from earlier part of the day are the splashes of colored water on walls and floors, which most people would address tomorrow morning. Ah yes, another lingering evidence of the celebration could be some people still in the hangover of the bhaang, maybe still sleeping it off, or if awake, not yet back from the cuckoo land. 🙂

This post is coming somewhat late in the day, but the attempt is cover an important aspect of the celebrations of today. The festival of Holi, for ages now, has been intimately associated with the story of Lord Krishna. And so, the celebration somehow does not seem to be complete without having one song about Holi in Biraj, or Brij, the native place where the child Krishna grew up. There abound many a legends and folk songs that tell of the Holi celebrations when Krishna was in Brij. And the same has also been carried over into the Hindi films. Many a songs of Holi in Hindi films revolve around the stories and pastimes of Krishna.

Blog ten year challenge (2009-2019)- Song number 20
——————————————————–

Today (21 march 2019) is the festival of Holi. Indian festivals are based on Indian festivals and so they fall on different days in different years vis a vis Gregorian Calender). For instance, ten years ago in 2009, Holi festival had taken place on 11 march.

It is not possible to have Ten year challenge for Holi festival songs, because first, the festival falls on different days in different years of Gregorian calender (as discussed above). Secondly, one movie normally has only one Holi song. I have yet to come across a movie that has two separate Holi songs.

We had this post last year on the same date by Avinashji where he has written about the background of the movie “Woh Main Nahi”(1974). He has listed all the famous songs and movies of Navin Nischol. Most of the songs which I like are in that list.

Missing Films of 1960s – 96

In this series, the film being introduced today is of certain significance in the history of Hindi film music. The film is ‘Ziarat Gahe Hind’. Translating this phrase – it means – “हिन्दोस्तान के दर्शनीय इस्लामिक धार्मिक स्थल” – or important pilgrimage centers of Islamic religion in India. ‘Ziarat’ means to see, to visit – “दर्शन करना”; ‘gahe’ means a dargah (“दरगाह”), a place of religious pilgrimage; and ‘Hind’ refers to “हिन्दोस्तान”, India. In a manner of speaking this film is the Islamic equivalent of films like ‘Sampooran Teerht Yatra’ which presents the travelogue of centers of Hindu pilgrimages.

Missing Films of 1960s – 95

We come to a very interesting episode of this series. The film I pick for today is ‘Koi Ghulam Nahin’ from 1970. The Geet Kosh listings say that the film has 6 songs, and all of them have been released on 78 rpm gramophone records. As I checked my own collection, I find that all the six songs are available. Just to check, I also went online and discovered that two songs are available on the YouTube. And very interestingly, one of them turns out to be a video. And a very interesting video at that. The song is sung by Rafi Sb, and is performed on screen by MG Ramachandran (MGR), the super star of South Indian cinema.

Our blog regulars have a whatsapp group. One of major hghlights of this group are the good morning messages and thoughts of the day by our beloved inhouse encyclopedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh. Nowadays our inhouse rocket scientist Gajendra Khanna has also started sharing thoughts of the day in the morning.

I almost invariably find myself wholeheartedly agreeing with these thoughts of the day. I need not not them down for use, because I find that I already practice them. I share some of these messages with my wife that I think she needs.

॰ ॰ ॰दिल का सूना साज़ तराना ढूंढेगा
तीर ए निगाह ए नाज़ निशाना ढूंढेगा॰ ॰ ॰

It is your words that tell of this predicament. Seasons come and go, as they have, year on year on year. . .  but the one who this heart wants to listen to again, has not returned after going away. . .

With today’s song, we come to the end of this series of duets of Rafi Sb. This series got initiated on Rafi Sb’s birth anniversary (24th Dec) in 2017.  Having gone through 33 episodes, we come to the closure with the Hindi alphabet letter ‘ह’. On the way, over the past almost 15 months, we have touched upon many a wonderful duet songs that simply perpetuate the legend of this divine voice. A blessing that we shared the same time and the planet with him for a certain period of time. The association, and its lasting awareness, has been such a lovely enchanting experience, that has left in the mind two opposing emotions – happiness and regret.  Happiness that we have a wonderful legacy treasure bequeathed to us by this voice. And regret that there could have been more, but alas not destined to be. God works in his own mysterious ways, and we are but mortals subject to his method and his directions.
