Ye shama to jali roshni ke liye

“Aaya Saawan Jhoom Ke” (1969) is one movie that is largely remembered for its songs more than for anything else. At least that is true for me. The fact that I have never watched the movie certainly helps. From the picturisation of songs in this movie, I get the impression that Dharmendra does most of his singing in gatherings where he sings songs addressed to Asha Parekh.

I recall listening to this song in my younger days. But as was the case with me for most songs, the only thing I knew about this song was what I heard, and no more. In other words, my knowledge of this song was confined to the fact that the song was sung by Rafi. Yes, I could identify Rafi’s voice even then. But I was not aware that songs had lyricists and music directors too. I used to think that the singer did everything !

There are very well known songs that remain well known to this day. Then there are songs that one may have listened to in distant past, never to be heard again. It is rather like Bollywood lost and found stories where family members get separated in childhood.

Bolo he zameen bolo aasmaan

I was searching for this difficult to find song for more than a year. This song is from an obscure mythological movie called “Chakradhaari” (1954). The movie may be obscure, as also its songs, but this particular song had broken the C grade barrier as far as its popularity is concerned. This song in fact had rubbed shoulders with the songs of A grade movies like “Naagin”, “Aar Paar”,”Taxi Driver” etc. This song had finished 13th in Binaca geetmala final of 1954.
