The ‘W’ song is a Rafi solo from the film ‘Ghar ki Izzat'(1948). From the sound of it, it does not sound like a 40’s song at all. Rather it feels like a 50’s song. The lyricist is Ishwar Chandra Kapoor and Pandit Govindram is the music director. Though the first hit solo by Rafi sahab is said to be from the film ‘Dulaari'(1949), Suhaani raat dhal chuki, but there are by some amazingly melodious songs like Keh ke bhi na aaye tum, Bahut maayoos hokar koochha e qaatil se ham nikle, Bahut mukhtsar hai hamaari kahaani, Ab na been bajaa, Mohabbat mein khudaaya aise guzre, Ae dil neend na aayee tamaam raat from before 1949. In these songs too he is standing out as the clearest and most mellifluous voice among singers of the time. Even more so in those two songs from the film ‘Amar Raj” (1946) posted in the blog. With songs like Ye zindagi ke mele and Ik dil ke tukde hazaar huye also in 1948, which are my personal favourites, Rafi sahab had already announced his arrival, even though we were not born to hear this announcement 🙂 🙂 .

Here is the ‘U’ song in the series of A-Z of Rafi songs. I knew this song vaguely, but when looking for ‘U” song in the list, I could not recognize it. I decided to try it because it is a Rafi solo composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. I heard the whole song and picturization, I liked the energy and mischief in the composition. The lyricist is Hasrat Jaipuri.

Greetings to all dear friends and readers on the celebration of Eid-ul-Azha (Eid-ul-Adha) today (16th October, 2013).
This festival is one of the two Eid celebrations as per the Islamic calendar. Today’s celebration is the more significant and the more important of the two Eid festivals, the other one being the Eid-ul-Fitr, that is celebrated at the end of the holy month of Ramzaan (Ramadan). It is also known as Eid-al-Kabir in Arabic, that means ‘the Greater Eid’. In north India, it is also called by the name ‘Badi Eid’.

“Friendship” is a concept of relationship. It means different things to different people. For me, it is a space where I can be myself, no pretense and no expectations of always being well behaved. And certain amount of taking each other for granted, as I believe I do for all my relationships. I have been lucky in my friends that they tolerate my taking them for granted, at times. And consider themselves to be punching bags, when I am in full flow on some matters/issues. And one of them dutifully registers all my complaints, and tries to find solutions, and gives valuable suggestions. So much so that it makes me feel guilty for worrying her in trivial matters.

I grew up in a small village and went to a village school, where sometimes the classes were conducted outside and we used to sit on the ground.

So here is the ‘S’ alphabet song I talked about in my last post on ‘R’ song. It is a Rafi solo with two versions, one happy and one sad, from the movie “Jhuk gayaa aasmaan”. Such a musical blockbuster film starring Rajendra Kumar and Saira Bano. And wherever I was looking for Rafi sahab’s songs in the list with S-J’s music they were all in red. I could not believe my luck when I found that this song was not posted.

It is the turn of “Q” now. I had decided on this song sometime ago. And having looked for other options too, came back to this song.
The singer here singing a Rafi solo, is an unknown actor. He is a tailor by profession and has been offered 1000 dinars to stitch up a dead body. How morbid, I thought. Hence I was looking for a different occasion, location , occupation kind of song. But it turns out that this is the “Q ‘ song for the time being. The poor fellow has an unpleasant task in front of him and an obscene amount of money for this work which will take care of his poverty for a while.

Here is the “P” song in the A-Z of Rafi songs series. This is a semi classical solo song composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal in the film ‘Waapas” (1969). The lyricist of this song is the venerable poet Majrooh Sultabpuri. It is Majrooh’s birth anniversary today on 1st October, I have come to realise just now.
