The ‘harmonium song’ and ‘roadside tamasha song’ are no more featuring in films now. The last song of these genre that I can recall was in the film ‘Aashiqui’ by Kumar Sanu and Anuradha Paudwal which goes :

The starkness of realism, the play of light – on the characters and the scenario, the ultimate expressions in black and white, a play of a poet of celluloid, one of the few directors and performers who had the ability to integrate the viewer into the scene, and transpose the empathy of emotions into the hearts of the audience. His genre, his creations stand out like a lonely weathered tree in a barren landscape. His expressions of emotions are like a crescendo of a silent scream rising heavenwards from the pits of sadness and pain – an experience that will leave the viewers heart asunder, and the mind drained and exhausted of emotions. Really, the message that comes home from his films speaks to the futility of this life, its trappings and achievements, its crazy whirlwind zips on the roller coaster that is the ups and downs of this journey without a destination. For in the end, you are either heartbroken that you never did get what you desired, or you are miserable that you lost after having got what you desired.

I have been going through the biographies and profiles of some of the well known Urdu poets – Mirza Ghalib, Ibrahim Zauq, Mir Taqi Mir, Daagh Dehlvi, Majaz Lucknawi, Firaq Gorakhpuri, Josh Malihabadi, Jigar Moradabadi etc. Most of them had faced prolonged pains and sufferings due to certain events that had happened in their lives. It is said that shaayars’ personal pains and sufferings bring the best shaayaris as these are born out of their first hand experiences. The lovers of ghazals still remember the poignant and melancholic ghazals of Ghalib, Mir, Firaq, Jigar etc.

I have been dithering for the last two days on the issue of which song post to send, as my 100th post. Now that I have decided on a song which is old enough and a Rafi solo, and melodious and touching as I wanted just such a song for this occasion. For some reason I have suddenly become tongue tied, or key board tied. Not that key boards ever get tied up like our human minds or tongues. But they do give us trouble, whenever we treat them badly. Only last week, it suffered a blow, with a steel bowl. And the key ‘ e ‘ came loose. It just wouldn’t stick in its place, I had all sorts of trouble in completing the last write up. Ideally I should have tried to complete the write up without using ‘e’. It is possible, as I read a paragraph on facebook, completely devoid of the alphabet ‘e’. Maybe next time this sort of thing happens, with a little used alphabet”s key than, it should be worth trying.

This is the last remaining song from Anjaana (1969). It is a ‘Jeep’ song and happens right at the beginning of the film. I got a chance to see this movie on T V during a weekend. Much to my chagrin, they cut two songs from the movie. Somebody tell these T V channels that this is a 60’s movie not 80’s movie, hence the songs are not surplus and they are the main attraction. I could see the song situation in the scene’s leading up to the song, only to see the scene after the song next. My husband alerted me that they are cutting the songs, as the ‘bhai-bahen’ song Hum behnon ke liye mere bhaiyya was cut.
