“Waqt” (1965) was a movie that like most B R Chopra movies rewrote the rules of the game. This movie was a multistarrer movie at a time when this term was not even coined. This term as well as the concept would be made use of in Hindi movies ten years later in “Sholay” (1975) and other movies.

Ravi Shanker Sharma departed from the mortal world last evening (7th March, 2012). Better known as simply Ravi, to the masses and the audiences of Hindi films, Ravi was 86 years, having just celebrated that milestone 5 days ago.

During my earlier stage of baptism to Hindi film songs of the golden era, whenever I came across some new songs I liked, I would want to know the name of the film, singers and themusic directors ( in that order) of the concerned songs. I never enquired about who wrote these likeable songs. One song that made me to know the name of the lyricist was “main zindagi ka saath nibhaata chala gaya” from HUM DONO(1961). This song virtually introduced me to a great Urdu poet and lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi. I feel shy to reveal here that though I liked those iconic songs of PYAASA (1957) but that did not trigger my brain to enquire as to who wrote those melancholic and the soul searching songs. As I came to know later, those songs were written by Sahir Ludhianvi.

“Heer” (1956), as the name suggests is based on the Punjabi tragic love story of Heer Ranjha. The title roles in this movie were played by Nutan and Pradeep Kumar.

“Bedaag” (1965) was produced by Anoop Sharma and directed by R Bhattacharya. The movie had Manoj Kumar, Nanda, Lalita Pawar, Shashikala, Shobha Khote, Raj Mehra, Mumtaz, Kammo, Sonia Lee, Mehmood, Walter Lavarre, Gyani etc in it.

“Naya Daur” (1957) was a pathbreaking movie of its time. Like most pathbreaking movies, it had a storyline that was different and therefore a risky proposition at the box office.

Jaan sakey to jaan

During 1950s and 1960s, there used to be quite a few movies with the word “ustaad” in them. This blog have had songs from movies viz “Do Ustaad” (1959), “Ustaadon Ke Ustaad” (1963), “Ustaad 420” (1963), “Ham Sab Ustaad Hain” (1965),”Sab Ka Ustaad” (1967) etc but the movie with the defining word in them, viz “Ustaad” was not among them.

In this blog, there are songs that belong to the category of “Why was this song not discussed earlier” category. Then there are cases of movies where the movie itself was/is not represented in the blog. “Aradhana” (1969) was one movie that was not represented for a long time. Same was the case with “Khilona”(1970).
