Missing Films of 1960s – 9
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The next film from 1962 that we introduce today is ‘Kaala Chashma’.  Oh well, with a name like this, frankly, if I had been in a movie going age in that era, even I would had steered clear of this one.  Not fair, I know, but the acumen to make such educated decisions is coming on now, after years of listening to Hindi film music, and getting a penchant for searching for lost songs.  At any other time in the past, I would have not paid any attention to film.  Especially after knowing that the lead actors are Manju and Amarnath. Rather the response would have been – Manju and Amarnath, who??

Fabulous Foot Tappers – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Goodness, more than 5 months since the last post in this series.  Starting in April, it was keeping a slow but regular pace till July, and then. . .

Anyways, back to one of my favorite genres – songs with a wonderful melody and a foot tapping beat that simply makes them irresistible hummers. One listens, and the mind simply wants to continue humming them, over and over again.  There are many such songs, and practically all of them are popular and well known. The thing that I am trying with this series is to locate the unfamiliar and less heard gems of this category, which have remained anonymous, mostly for the reason that they are from films that either did not get released, or films that remained obscure and unheard of themselves.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 8
———————————————————

ROOP REKHA (1948) was a film that I was not aware of until I heard mp3 clip of a song from the film. An advertisement of the film which appeared in one of the issues of ‘Filmindia’ 1948 revealed that the film was produced by Padam Maheshwari under the banner of Chitrakala Mandir and it was directed by Samar Guha. Veena Kohli and Rehan, probably new comers, were in the lead role supported by Asha Poshley, Smriti Biswas, Durga Mota, Ajmal, G N Butt etc. I have no idea as to which genre the film belonged to but going by another advertisement of the film which says ‘Burning Punjab brings out the challenge picture of 1948’, the story appears to be based on the social impact on Punjab immediately after the partition.

Missing Films of 1960s – 8

I am really incensed. Generally that does not happen easily, but today it has. Going thru the list of un-represented films from 1960s, the next target film for me was ‘Hawa Mahal’. I already looked for the 78 rpm records of this film, and have drawn a blank. From more than one source, I was informed that no records were manufactured for this film. Disappointing as this information was in itself, I was concerned, but not too much. Because I knew that I have this film with me on disk. So when the time came to prepare a post for the film ‘Hawa Mahal’, I took out video file of the film, with the intent of listening to the songs and to prepare a upload version of one of them.

So the experience repeats itself yet once again. Search and locate, and listen, as many songs as you may.  There still will be many more songs that will surprise you. This song is coming based on a request from a far away land. A friend and visitor on the blog from West Indies, the name of the gentleman is Ramdass, has requested to locate this song, and to post it.

In July 2014, when the Blog was celebrating a milestone of 10,000 songs, I had written an article on Mallika Pukhraj and discussed her iconic nazm  Abhi To Main Jawaan Hoon. At that time, I had heard almost all ghazals, nazms and thumris rendered by her and available on the websites. One of her ghazals which I liked for very unique style of rendition was “Dillagi Meri Koi Kya Jaane”. Surprisingly, a good quality video of her rendition of this ghazal was available on YT. I was under the impression that Mallika Pukhraj sang this ghazal in Wadia Movietone’s film ‘Kahaan Hai Manzil Teri’ (1939).  I liked her rendition so much that I decided that I would attempt an article on this ghazal for the blog some time later. However, after a couple of months or so, I found to my dismay that the said video of the ghazal was deleted from YT.
