“Dil Diyaa Dard Liyaa” (1966) was a movie that was just before my time. I had got an opportunity to watch this movie for free a few years later but I passed over that opportunity because the movie,the actors as well as the storyline of this movie were not quite the cup of tea of kids my age. “what is this ? These movies cannot think of anything other than pyaar. There are more to life than pyaar, such as maar dhaad (fights) etc.”- The leader among us pre-teens opined and the rest of us readily agreed and walked off after some time.

In western cultures, only one day in the spring season , called Valentine’s day is dedicated for love. In Indian culture , on the other hand, an entire season, viz the rainy season is the season of love. It did not begin with the advent of Bollywood movies. Even in ancient Sanskrit novels, for instance in Kalidas’ “meghdoot”, we find the rainy season described as the season when there is love in the air.

Manbhaawan saawan aayaa

I generally describe the songs in this blog as Bollywood movie songs, using “Bollywood movie” as a catchall phrase to describe all Hindi movies. Bollywood was a term that was coined for Bombay’s Hindi movies industry. But in reality, Bombay was not the only place where such movies were made. Places like Lahore (before 1947), Calcutta, Poona also had thriving Hindi movies industry there.

While looking for forgotten gems, look what I have discovered. This Rafi song is from a forgotten movie called “Do Khilaadi” (1976). Gauhar Kanupri is the lyricist and Usha Khanna has composed the music.
