“Veeraanganaa-1947” was directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal for Laxmi Productions, Bombay. This was a movie from the genre of “historical” movies. The cast of this movie included Shobhana Samarth, Prem Adib, Jeewan, Prabha, Badri Prasad, Sankata Prasad, Shanta Patel, Kanta and others. This movie has eight songs as per Geet Kosh-Vol-II (1941-1950). Kavi Pradeep wrote the lyrics for the songs in this movie under the name of Miss Kamal. The singers’ names for all the individual songs are not mentioned against the songs of this movie. Hari Prasanna Das and Manna Dey were the two music directors for this movie. In Geet Kosh four songs are attributed to composer Hari Prasanna Das, so we can guess that the other songs are composed by Manna Dey.

‘Taraana-1979’ was directed by Deepak Bahri for ‘Chanda Pictures’. It was presented by Rajshri Productions and produced by Tarachand Barjatya. Living upto the name of the production house this movie too gives us a clean, musical, family entertainer movie. This is a nice movie having a nice story line of ‘love’ and including sub-plots of ‘lost and found’ story, and ‘wealthy and poor’ conflict to it. The director of this movie Deepak Bahri has some good films to his name. These include movies like ‘Agent Vinod-1977’, ‘Ham Se Hain Zamaana-1983’, ‘Ustaadi Ustaad Se-1982’, ‘Woh Jo Haseenaa-1983’ and others.

Today’s song is from a folk tale based film ‘Naulakha Haar’ (1953).
The film was inspired by the famous folk tale of Rajasthan about the love story of Alha-Udal, with the background of 2 warring kingdoms. A lot of cinematic liberty is taken while writing the film story, in order to make the film appealing to more types of audience. Films on famous folk tales are not uncommon in the Hindi film industry. In fact they are a great source of imagination to form hundreds of stories, with desirable changes in the script. Hindi film makers have been making films on such traditional folk stories from all over India. When they exhausted such stories they turned to stories from Arabia and Europe too, besides our own Mythology and Puranas. India got Independence in 1947, but till 1950, we still had the British King as our Head of the country and all British laws and rules applied here. It was only on 26th January 1950 that we shed the title of ” a Dominion of the British Empire” and we became an Independent Republic. We had our own Head of the Government and our own laws and rules to follow. We had our president and Prime Minister and we were a Democratic Nation – no more a part of any kingdom anymore.
