THE JOY OF NFS (song No. 5)
———————————
Somewhere in the late 2011, AK ji of Songsofyore, had written on this Blog about the importance of NFS. After reading his views, I too wrote a rather lengthy comment supporting the inclusion of NFS on this Blog. Our contention was that, prior to the Hindi Film Music becoming popular all over India, it was those gazals, Geets and Bhajans, privately sung and recorded by various artists which had ruled the tastes of music lovers. In fact many famous singers had recorded NFS in the beginning phase of their singing careers. Some names are Talat Mehmood, Saigal, Pankaj Mullik, Jagmohan and JUTHIKA ROY !

THE JOY OF NFS (Song No. 4)
——————————-
From my house towards Juhu, there is a building at the corner of Gulmohar Circle which has a board- ‘Karachi Residents’ Association’. On enquiry I discovered that this was a building owned by Sindhi speaking Hindu and Muslims people who resided in Karachi before Partition. I was told that 5-6 such buildings exist all over Mumbai. On further enquiries, I was informed that there were a few buildings of ‘Lahore Residents Association’ also (Punjabi speaking Hindus and Muslims). When I met one of the residents of ‘Lahore’ wala building, that old gentleman was speaking so lovingly about old Lahore that I was surprised. Even after 65 years of partition, these people had such fondness for Lahore. . . or Karachi, for that matter.

THE JOY OF NFS (Song No. 3)
—————————–
Believe it or not, but there is some kind of an unseen hand of Destiny that shapes Human life. In film industry, one can see very strange cases. Some people gracefully retire, when they are on Top of their careers and some have to retire because there is no work for them. Some people join the industry in a department of their choice, but Destiny changes their life and they end up working and succedding in an entirely different field of activity.

THE JOY OF NFS (Song No. 2)
——————————–
When films started ‘ Talking’, the industry needed actresses who could look good and sing well. Already hard pressed to get girls from educated respectable families, the producers turned to professional singers (Tawayafs) or the Courtesans. These girls knew Hindi/Urdu well, were trained in singing and were experts in handling people. They could and actually did replace the Anglo Indian girls, who had been in the industry since the Silent era, but who found it difficult to talk or sing in Hindi/Urdu. There were some enterprising Anglo Indian girls like Sabita Devi or Irina Gasper, who learnt speaking Hindi and singing just to continue their careers successfully. Later on she made a Hit pair with Motilal in many films, starting with Shehar ka jaadu-1934.

THE JOY OF NFS (Song No. 1)
——————————–
MUSIC is an integral part of every Indian. From birth to death, we are drenched in music. During Vedic times, the Rishis used to teach their students verses in Taal and Sur, so that the students would remember them easily. You will have observed that whenever there is a Mahapooja or an Yadnya, the Purohits will recite the Mantras in a typical rhythm and sur.

BHAJAN MALA – GOLDEN 50s (Pushp-3)
—————————————
There is a class of people, who make faces when a Mythological film is mentioned. According to them, seeing such films is ” outdated ” and ” Fundamentalist ‘. They feel that those who see such films are way behind the times. These people forget that in the so called ” advanced” world of Hollywood, even today,Mythological, costume and Historical films are regularly produced. Only thing is that these films are no longer advertised on the same scale as was the case a few decades back.

THE VIBRANT 40S (Episode No. 12)
————————————-
Initially, when the Talkie films started, most of the actors and actresses of the silent era, who could speak Hindi/Urdu and sing a little got entry into these films. Soon many Anglo-Indian girls and actors like master Vithal, who could not speak Hindi properly, leave aside singing, had to be excluded from Talkie films.(Master Vithal who was selected as the Hero for India’s First Talkie film,”Aalam Ara”-1931, based on his looks,Physique and his silent film credentials-over the capable Mehboob Khan- gave such pathetic performance in his Hindi/Urdu dialogues that he had to be shown as Unconcious almost throughout the film to hide his poor diction of Hindi/Urdu dialogues.)
