Presenting the song in response to the farmaish posted by Arun ji Deshmukh.
I am sure the number of folks would be very few, those who have not heard the iconic song, ‘Mere Piyaa Gaye Rangoon’ . The film Patanaga comes from the year 1949, which is considered as a watershed year in the annals of Hindi film music. Reviving a wonderful qawwaali from one of those not so well known films, and yet a gem of a composition and a fabulous presentation. The film is Mujrim Kaun Khooni Kaun (1965). It is a social drama produced under the banner of Pratima Pictures, Bombay and it is directed by Ramneek Vaidya. The star cast includes Jairaj, Indira aka Indira Billi, Heeralal, Sapru, Shammi, Bela Bose, Asit Sen, Raj Mehra, Brahm Bhardwaj, Gopal Sehgal, Shyam Kumar, V Gopal, Mirza Musharraf, Sherry etc. The lyrics for this film are written by three poets viz., Anjum Jaipuri, Akhtar Romani and Naqsh Lyallpuri. This particular qawwaali is written by Akhtar Romani. The music composition is by Baabul – another one of the unsung talents that have produced absolutely A class music, but never really got their due recognition in the industry.

“Moorti” (1945) is one of those movies are are so obscure that finding its songs on YT is often out of question. So it always comes as a pleasant surprise when one can locate such songs there. And I was pleasantly surprised to see this song already uploaded, though any details on this song were conspicuous by their absence. It is not that I am complaining. With such obscure songs, any small mercies will do.

The mention the word ‘qawwaali’ to a Hindi film buff, and 95 out of 100, the response will be the humming sounds of ‘Ye Ishq Ishq Hai Ishq Ishq. . .’. As a poetry form, qawwali originated in Persia and traveled to the subcontinent, during the emergence of the Sufi philosophers in the 12th and 13th centuries. In its original form, its intent is to sing the praises of Allaah, the Almighty, Prophet Muhammad, and other saints. The art was exclusively performed at places of religious worship and at dragaahs (mausoleums) of revered saints and teachers. The poetry is implicitly intended to be spiritual in its context, and its central themes are love, devotion and longing (of man for the Divine).

I have not watched the movie called “Talaaq” (1958) but from its songs and some online reading up (both could be misleading 😀 ) leads me to believe that Rajendra Kumar and Kamini Kadam get married, have a child (Honey Irani) then fight among themselves and then file for divorce. In all these, the child finds himself kicked around like a football. when the warring duo finally reconcile with each other and search for their child, they find out that he is not to be found. For all they know, he has become an orphan and who knows, he could well have ended up in an orphanage.
