“Miyaan Biwi Raazi”(1960) was directed by Jyoti Swaroop for Anupam Chitra, Bombay. The movie had Shrikant Gaurav, Kamini Kadam, Mehmood, Seema Deo, Manorama, David Abraham, Sabita Chatterjee, Raja Gosavi, Daisy Irani, Niranjan Sharma, Shaila Vaz etc in it.

After posting the ‘thhumri’ ‘Saajan ki Baat Niraali’, here is one more ‘thhumri’ by Suman Kalyanpur under the direction of Khan Saheb Abdul Rehman Khan. The traditional lyrics were modified by Khan Saheb himself. These two thumries were on an Extended Play disk (EP) and was purchased by me 46 years ago in January 1969.

OK, back from ‘Bapu Ne Kaha Tha’ and on to the next available movie in this sequence. Today, I am posting a wonderful song from the 1962 film ‘Manchali’. Ah yes, we had another ‘manchali’, before the more well known film of the same name from 1973 starring Sanjeev Kumar and Leena Chandavarkar. It appears that this film most likely sank without making any ripples, or leaving any memories behind. There is really very little information available for this film.

Mall Road, for me, is connected with wonderful sweet memories of my childhood. As it is, Mall Road is there in many cities, here in India and also outside India. But in India, and more so in my mind, the mention of this word is almost always connected with Simla.

Prabhat Films, Bombay (now Mumbai) wound-up its glorious innings with this film ‘Gaj Gauri’ in 1958. The surprising fact is that this ‘Pauraanik’ (Religious) film is presumed to be permanently lost. Raja Thakur directed it with the star-cast of Sulochana Latkar, Ratna Mala, Shahu Modak, Anant Kumar, Nana Plasikar, Tara Dixit, Vijay Limaye, Vijay Duggal, Neelam, Vishwas Kunthey, Kelkar, Gramopaadhye, Hemraj, Kishore Paranjape, Narendra Bhandari, Vijay Dixit and a Hathi named ‘Ram Prasad’.

Genius of Jaidev – 34

One more song from the film ‘Jiyo Aur Jeene Do’ is a surprise song for me. I heard it for the first time due to the ‘meherbaani’ of ‘uperwala’. (Geographically Delhi is ‘uper’ to Mumbai.) The second surprise is the sweet voiced singer. Suman Kalyanpur has sung only two songs with Jaidev. (as far as I know) The other one is “Mai Teri Dasi Tu Mera Data” from the 1972 film ‘Bhavana’. After hearing this song every music lover would opine in unison, that they should have come together more often. One more rare occurrence is lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri providing lyrics for Jaidev. I request our statisticians of the blog to make me ‘buddha’ (dictionary meaning – ‘one who knows’) about these statistics.
