Debaki Bose (1898 – 1971) is regarded as one of the pioneers in the field of film direction along with P C Barua, V Shantaram and Nitin Bose. After the production of talkie films started in 1931, Debaki Bose joined New Theatres and got his first chance to show his directorial skills in ‘Puran Bhagat’ (1933). This film is regarded as a turning point in the realm of talkie films. For the first time, the dialogue deliveries by actors were made more like natural talk than in the loud voices with theatrical gestures which was carried over to the films from the theatres. Debaki Bose also used expressions of the actors to supplement the dialogues.

So today is the 81st birthday of our favourite “he-man” (a tag like the angry-young-man tag that was given to Amitabh Bachchan a long time ago.)
Born in Punjab and loved the world over he is an actor first who went on to become a producer to launch his sons in filmdom. He was possibly the only actor to have sailed successfully through the Rajesh Khanna and then the Amitabh Bachchan wave. He had a hold on comedy too -“Chupke Chupke” is a case in point. So today we are celebrating Dharamendra.

I have no idea when it was for the first time that I heard this song under discussion. I may have listened to it for the first time on radio many years ago.
I have never watched this movie ‘Jaane Anjaane-1971’. The song that I associate this movie with is not this title song, but other better known songs viz. ‘teri neeli aankhon ke’ and later ‘chham chham baaje re payaliya’. I became familiar with these songs when when I got a compilation of songs recorded in 1987-98 that I labelled as ‘classical songs from Hindi movies’.

Hullo to all in Atuldom
A very belated Happy Diwali to all those who I missed to wish. Hope it was sweet and well lit for all. We are into the new Samvat and here is the first birthday.
We all know this birthday boy as a winner of 14 filmfare awards. He has a significant fan following in Asia and among the Indian Diasporas across the globe. He is one who dared to pick villainous roles early on in his career –something like say Vinod Khanna or Shatrughan Sinha of the previous generation. He is the pet of the film maker who is considered the king of romantic films in the current era. His paternal grandfather was a Pathan and the family moved to India post 1948. He grew up in Delhi and was educated from schools and colleges there but his road to fame and fortune began when he joined the Theatre Action Group and was mentored by Barry John. Oh yes I am speaking of Badshah alias Raj (naam toh suna hoga?) alias Rahul alias Shahrukh Kkkkhan –like the way he said KKKKiran in one of his early movies.

Today (16 october 2016) is the birthday of Hema Malini, MP from Mathura.
But we will not go into her political career here. That is not of any particular interest to this blog. What we are interested in here is music and the film industry – and that is what we will focus on.
