Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 5

Continuing my search for some rare songs which are not available on YT, I came across mp3 clip of a song ‘bah dheere dheere naiyya’ from the film ‘Paraaye Bas Mein’ (1946) on Dr Surjit Singh’s Website. Pran and Asha Posley were in the lead roles in the film. The film had 7 songs written by two lyricists – Tufail Hoshiyarpuri and Aziz Kashmiri and were composed by two music directors – Niaz Hussain Shami and Vinod. It is said that originally, Pandit Amarnath was to compose the songs for the film. Due to deterioration of his health, Vinod and Niaz Hussain were entrusted with music direction.

I am back again to old films. This time it is a fun song from film Kaneez-1949.
After the partition in 1947, normalcy was returning in both Pakistani and Indian film industries by 1948-49. Most migrations-both ways- were over, though minor ones continued up to the mid 1960s. After 1965, there was no exchange of films, nor was there any movement of artistes between the two countries- barring a few exceptions in case of artistes. The new rulers of Pakistan were convinced that Indian films( being superior in every aspect ) were killing their indigenous film industry. Perhaps they forgot that majority of adult population of Pakistan had grown up on Indian films, music and the culture. And therefore smuggling of Indian films and Music became a huge business in Pakistan after the 1960s.

Though I would like to be more systematic in discussing the songs in the blog, I have not been able to put my intentions to practice. One of my aims these days is to discuss a song of 1930s every day in a bid to cover all the available songs of 1930s. Another aim is to cover all the songs of movies. Yet another aim is to ensure that songs from movies as yet unrepresented in the blog are discussed in the blog. Then there are artists nearing their landmarks or artists having their anniversaries and so their songs must be discussed.
