“Basant” (1942) is a very important movie in the annals of Hindi movies. In this movie Ulhas and Mumtaz Shanti play stage performers. Naturally this movie has several songs picturised on them. Later on, their daughter (baby Mumtaz, who was none other than Madhubala) also starts performing on stage.

Some times name of the movie gives you an idea what to expect. If the title of a movie begins with the adjective “Chhoti” and it is followed by a common noun depicting a female person then you can expect a movie full of sacrifices and sad songs. In Hindi movies, any situation is good enough situation for bursting into a song. I have seen actors singing a song while on a death bed, or while they are fighting. They sing when sad, and they also sing when they are happy. Social occasions means lots of songs. They in fact also sing when they are travelling, be it by a bullock cart,chariot, tonga,rickshaw,bicycle,car or train.

I have so far discussed songs from “Singaar” (1949) that were sung by Suraiyya and Surinder Kaur and picturised on Suraiyya and Madhubala respectively. This movie also has songs sung by other singers and picturised on lesser actors.
