This Week, That Year – 6
———————————–
23May – 29May, 2011

The seven days in May 2011, from 23rd to 29th. I am sure the world was extremely busy, as it always is, and there would be no dearth of info about what the then current trends and news were. Seems like this week was kind of low key and ordinary in terms of world events. But let us not go there. 🙂

When I was about 15 year old, I saw Dev Anand for the first time. Not on screen, but in person. I had gone to my Uncle, who was an assistant Police Commissioner in Bombay that time. Through his contacts, we attended a shooting of Dev’s film. After this I saw Ashok kumar, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and many other actors and actresses in person at various times. Though I did not speak to any cine artiste in those times, I have seen them with my own eyes. So, I had access to their first hand information, their films, songs, music etc. All the material was available in film magazines, newspapers and also in books. If I had wanted to write about them at that time, all the material was available – all credible, genuine and full of facts which could be corroborated or checked with them or with persons close to them……

When Imperial Movietone released India’s  first sound film, ‘Alam Ara’  in  1931, other top film production companies of Hindi films followed suit. Madan Theatre with ‘Shirin Farhad’ (1931), Ranjit Movietone with ‘Dev Devyani’ (1931), Sagar Films with ‘Meri Jaan’ (1931), Prabhat Film Company with ‘Ayodhya Ka Raja’ (1932, in Marathi and Hindi), New Theatre with ‘Mohabbat Ke Aansoo” (1932) were some of the early film production companies to release their first Hindi sound films.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2011-2021) – Song No. 23
———————————————————————————–

This day ten years ago (19 may 2011) saw four songs being covered in the blog. That month of may 2011 was seemingly a month when I was not in a position to discuss songs with the same regularily and rate that I used to achieve in the past. My guess is that summer vacations were on at that time. My school going daughter, my wife and our three pets had joined me at Nagpur and that as the reason for less number of posts in this month. With the benefit of hindsight, even that rate that I managed to achieve in this month ten years ago makes that month seems like a prolific month vis a vis the same month ten years later. 107 songs were covered in may 2011, whereas 18 days of the corresponding month this year has seen only 26 songs getting covered in first 18 days of the month of may 2021.

I do not like getting bored. Do you ? I am sure, no one wants to get bored, forget liking it. Have you ever thought about what is ” Liking ” ? Psychology says, you like a thing when it is in line with your thinking, your values and your beliefs. For example – an old man does not ” Like ” the behaviour of ” Youngsters “, because they do not think on his lines, their values are adapted to current times and they believe only in practical ways and not emotional ways !

I had almost forgotten about the existence of a film titled ‘Room No. 9’ (1946) until I came across a song from the film on one of the video sharing platforms a few days back. I checked on our Blog to know that two songs from the film was covered in the Blog as early as in March 2013 but surprisingly, the song which I had heard has not yet been covered in the Blog. I liked the song so much that I decided to share the song on the Blog with a small write-up.

Writing on old films, its people and its music is an unusual hobby. Such people are very few and what they write is read by a limited but a large circle. This group of people are exclusive and generally they are not recognised by the society. Funnily, ” writing on old films” is mainly ( and wrongly) equated with old songs only. people are not aware that there is a world beyond old songs and music as far as old films are concerned.
