Main banoongi film star

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
The melodious strains of ‘Chalo Dildaar Chalo, Chaand Ke Paar Chalo’, composed more than 4 decades ago, sound and feel like a fresh breeze of air, every time one listens to it. The magnum opus of the famously talented Ghulam Mohammed, a string of his best creations – ‘Chalte Chalte Yun Hi Koi Mil Gayaa Thhaa’, ‘Inhi Logon Ne Le Leena Dupatta Mera’, ‘Mausam Hai Aashiqaana’ and more – establish the definition of what Ghulam Mohammed’s body of musical creation is. A pity that this success came somewhat late in the day – a release that marked a watershed in the history of Hindi film music was to happen about three years after the demise of its creator.

I have discussed as many as four songs from “Taxi driver” (1954) but I was not aware of this song. I became aware of this song only after its lyrics were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

I was under the impression that I had already discussed this song. But as is often the case, I realised that my impression was wrong when the lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Hindi movie music is enriched by a large number of artists. In many cases, these artists are known more by their work, rather than by their names. For instance, the name Sudhir Phadke may not ring many bells, especially with the younger generation, but just make them listen to songs like Din hai suhaana aaj pahli taarikh hai(Pahli taarikh) (1954) and Jyoti kalash chhalke(Bhaabhi ki choodiyaan)(1961).
These two immortal compositions are the creations of none other than Sudhir Phadke whose birth anniversary falls on 25 july.

Here is a drunkard song that begins with the line ‘Main nashe mein hoon”. No, this song is not the title song ( Mujhko yaaron maaf karna main nashe me hoon) of “Main Nashe Mein Hoon” (1959) sung by Mukesh. This song is from another movie that was released in the same year.

In fact there are very few songs that are about selling some products. I have discussed a few songs where chanajor or similar stuff is being sold. In one such write up, readers came up with the list of a few other songs where some item was being sold.

I came across this song a few hours ago. And I wondered where this song was hiding all these days from my view.
This is a nice club/part dance song from “Parvarish” (1958). The song is sung by Lata and Manna Dey. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist and the delightful music is composed by Dattaram.

There may be more Hindi movies called “Laila Majnu” than one can count, but the two main movies of this title that I can readily recall are the ones that came in 1953 and 1976. The 1953 movie had Nutan and Shammi Kapoor playing the legendary lovers while the same roles wre enacted by Ranjeeta and Shammi Kapoor’s nephew Rishi Kapoor , respectively.

“Hazaar Raatein” (1953) is quite an obscure movie with equally obscure songs. That has not stopped us from discussing as many as two songs from this movie already in this blog.
