Today (14 november 2016) is the death anniversary of yesteryear leading lady and character actor, Veena.
I must admit that I got to know Veena’s name less than 10 years ago. It was probably due to memsaab’s blog. In fact, that blog has made me aware of many personalities that I had seen for years on screen without knowing their names.

In the 1940s, there were four main Hindi/Urdu/Hindusani movie producing centres in India, viz. Bombay (Mumbai), Calcutta (Kolkata), Lahore and Poona (Pune).
Bombay (Mumbai) had Ranjit Movietone, Calcutta (Kolkata), the New Theatres and Poona (Pune) had Prabhat Films as leading producers of Hindi/Urdu films. Lahore centre was dominated by Pancholi Art Pictures owned by Dalsukh Pancholi. He was also the owner of Lahore’s biggest film studio, Pancholi Art Studio during pre-independent period.

PAAPI (1943) was produced by Satish Batra under the banner of Batra Productions, Lahore. The film was directed by Majnu. The star cast included Madhuri, Zahoor Raja, Majnu, Salma, Satish Batra, Moti, etc. I do not have much idea about the story line of the film. In a snippet appearing in one of the ‘Filmindia’ issues of 1943, there was an indication that it was a story built around the life of a sinner who had embarked upon his vicious design and poisoning the society. Probably, the film must have ended with the sinner getting reformed.

Today (15 august 2016) is the 69th independence day of India.
With the passage of so much time, the general knowledge of younger generation about Indian freedom struggle and independence is no longer what it used to be in the past. One study mentions that the biggest source to make people aware of our independence day are patriotic songs from movies, followed by school text books.
