“Kaneez” (1949) is a movie that had actors like Munawwar Sultana, Kuldip Kaur, Khwaja Sabir, Shyam, Sinha etc in it. Most actors of this movie hardly ring any bells for me. The songs of this movie are also not all that well known nowadays, but the songs are lovely to listen to. This movie has songs by singers other than the usual names and that makes for a refreshing change.

My readers may have noticed my absence from the blog for the last few days. The reason was I was travelling for much of the time in the last few days and I was unable to get hold of internet. At the end of all this journey, now I have ended up at a place where things that I took for granted are a luxury. Electricity itself comes and goes quite frequently here and the less said about internet connectivity, the better. Wireless modem, which works in small towns elsewhere does not work here. Still, I have managed to rig myself an internet connection. The catch is, it works only if there is electicity. I will try and get myself active on the blog again, electicity permitting.

Thaanedaar, viz inchange of the police station (Thaanaa) is a very important person as far as public are concerned. The original term for Thaanedaar, that old generation grew up with, is “Daarogaa”. “Darogaa” was much feared ( and therefore respected) by aam jantaa. Just as members of more educated sections of society aspired to become ICS (and later IAS) officers, members of lower rung of society aspired to become Policeman and from there to Hawaldaar and then rise up to the exalted post of “daarogaa”. Other posts that carried similar awe and shock among public was “Kotwaal”. There is in fact a saying in Hindi “Sainyya bhaye kotwaal to ab dar kaahe kaa” (My beloved has become kotwaal, so now I have noting to fear).

“Shabnam”(1949) is a movie starring Kamini Kaushal, Dilip Kumar, Cuckoo, Jeewan etc. This movie seems to have lots and lots of songs in it that get played in the movie one after the other. Of course, I have not seen this movie and my observation is based on the number of songs that this movie has. As it is, I have discussed four songs from this movie and there seems to be many more songs in this movie.
