It is a commonly held view that obscure movies and songs are those that were created long long ago. But that is not always the case. There could be movies and songs that may have ended up as obscure even if they may have been created as late as in 1980 !

There are songs for various occasions, like festivals, and also for certain days, viz the first day of the month, but I was not aware that there was a Hindi movie song for the last day of the year too.

“Saajan Ki Saheli” (1980) is a movie which came up in the last stage of the Golden era of Hindi movie music. During those days, we fortunately still had the kind of music in some movies that we had grown up to love all these decades. These were off beat movies, smaller budget movies, family values movies- in brief “non mainstream movies”.

“Bandish” (1980) was a movie starring Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini. This was a Rajesh Khanna movie in his second phase as an actor after he had lost his superstardom. He tried very hard to regain his superstardom, but it was too late for him by that time. Typically his stellar performance in these movies would meet wit lukewarm response from movie goers. During 1970s, Amitabh Bachchan had taken over the crown of the number one male actor of the decade. The one actor, who looked like a challenger was Vinod Khanna, but Vinod Khanna’s mind was not into his career. He became a devotee of Achaarya Rajneesh (that is how he was then known, before he began to call himself “Osho”). As a result, he ended up nowhere. He neither got the spiritual nirvaana from his spiritual guru nor could he devote himself whole heartedly to his movie career. If he could only devote himself whole heartedly to his movie career, he could have been number one, at least briefly, and who knows, may be for even longer durations.
