In the past, I have posted a couple of memorable songs from “Ek Gaaon Ki Kahaani” (1957). Both the songs were sung by Talat Memmood and picturised on him.

When one talks of “Dard” (1947), one is mostly reminded on the immortal song “Afsaana likh rahi hoon dile bekaraar ka” which took the nation by storm. It was sung by Umadevi (later known as Tuntun) and picturised on Munawwar Sultana.

“Qaidi no 911” (1959) was a “B grade” movie in the sense that it was an action thriller and it had Sheikh Mukhtar as action hero. When I say it was a B grade movie, I mean no disrespect. In fact, I think movies like this with Sheikh Mukhtar as hero were as good as the A grade action movies of 1970s. Yes, action movies had begun to be regarded as A grade by 1970s.

Ghar ki raunaq hai ghar waali

I have posted two songs of contrasting moods from ‘Bandi” (1957) in the past. One was a comedy song, and the other was a poignant song. Both were sung by Kishore Kumar and picturised on himself.

The movie “Dard” (1947) was a movie full of nice songs. The most popular song from this movie was Afsana likh rahi hoon(Dard)(1947),which was sung by Uma Devi (later known as Tuntun).

I thought that Suraiyya’s career as an actor-singer was over in 1950s, but it seems that a few of her movies were released in 1960s as well.

“Singaar” (1949) is a movie starring Suraiyya, and there are some very nice songs sung by her in this movie.

I was aware of a movie called “Naatak” (1974), but there was another movie of this name in 1947. “Naatak” (1947) had a very young Suraiyya in lead role. So she obviously sang her own songs in this movie.

Suraiyya, who ruled the roost as am actor-singer gradually ran out of steam in 1950s. The fact that she would sing only for herself meant that as her demand as an actress fell, she stopped getting singing offers as well.
