HAMAARI BAAT (1943) was produced under the banner of Bombay Talkies and directed by M I Dharmsey. Devika Rani and Jairaj were in the lead roles with, David, Shah Nawaz, Mumtaz Ali, Kamta Prasad, Raj Kapoor and Suraiya in supporting roles. This was the last film in which Devika Rani acted. As per http://www.myswar.com, there were 10 songs in the film all being penned by Pandit Narendra Sharma. Anil Biswas was the music director of the film.

It is amazing. You just turn your back, seems for maybe a couple of days, and Atul ji sneaks in a rapid fire century. And before you know it, hey, another milestone, another 100 songs up on the charts. And this one, seems to be very, very fast indeed. Like hitting a hundred before lunch on the first day in a test match. Wow. It was just 1st April that we did the previous milestone, and just on 14th today, we have the next. At this rate, it is definite that we shall hit the 8000 mark by the end of this month. 🙂

Gyan Mukherji was the producer and the star cast had Ashok Kumar, Mumtaz Shanti, Shah Nawaz, Moti, P.F.Pithawala, Prahlad, Harun, Mubarak etc. This movie was India’s first multi starrer movie and also the most successful movie of those days. This movie was the original lost and found movie which was then copied and emulated in countless number of movies for several decades to come.

“Kismat” (1943) has the distinction of being India’s most successful movie at the box office (it ran for three years at one movie hall) before its record was broken by “Sholay” (1975) (it ran for five years in one movie hall). “Kismat” (1943) really must have caught the imagination of the public at that time. And its music definitely played a big role in bringing movie watchers to the movie halls.
