Today (14 july) is the death anniversary of Leela Chitnis (9 september 1909- 14 july 2003). She was one of the pioneers of Hindi cimema during its early days. She was a well educated lady from a respectable family who entered movie world which was till then considered the preserve of courtesans. It still surprises some of my friends when I tell them that I completed my high school studies in Hindi medium. It was unthinkable that a person belonging to one of the southern states would join the Hindi medium school. It was a surprise for me as well.

In life, every body has a target. We have seen different people choose different routes to reach the same target as they prefer one route over another according to their likings. Target of Atulji’s blog is not to produce another version of HFGK. But to give all hindi film song lovers a chance to cherish songs from different contributors with full lyrics and comments, which is then followed by discussion on the story line of the movies and the artists by our in house encyclopedia, Shri Arunji and others join in.

Here is another song from Achhoot Kanya. This has to be one of the first bullock cart songs. In the early years of the past century, the hero and heroine did not, or could not get physical during romantic numbers. Despite that constraint, Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani share a lovely chemistry during this song. They sit close together, lean into each other and smile often.

A lovely and endearing song – a song that I encountered just today for the first time. Sometimes, well not only sometimes, but quite often, some of the songs by Asha Bhosle, give you a sudden surprise – oh OK, so it is Asha. On first hearing in passing, if one did not know the singer’s name, the mind would not easily pick out Asha ji’s name as the singer. Yes, a very soft, a very humble, and a very mellow composition.

About a month back, I stumbled upon a song ‘aankhen to huyi band magar dard jagaa re’ from the film BEGUM (1945) sung by Ashok Kumar. Until then, I had neither heard of this song nor of the film which had Ashok Kumar and Naseem Bano in the lead roles. I liked the song so much that I must have listened to it umpteen times. The song is written by Gopal Singh Nepali and set to music by Hari Prasanna Das (H P Das) whose name also I heard for the first time. From the Indian Film Trade Data website, I observed that H P Das had given music to 10 Hindi films between 1935 and 1948 including 2-3 films jointly with Manna Dey.
