‘Yaasmeen’, a film from 1955 is well known for some wonderful gems coming from the pen of Jaan Nisaar Akhtar and the music composition by C Ramchandra. The film has ten songs out of which four are already represented on this blog, including the evergreen iconic rendering of “Bechain Nazar Betaab Jigar” by Talat Mehmood, and “Mujh Pe Ilzaam e Bewafaai Hai” by Lata Mangeshkar. Ever since Ghulam Haider introduced dholak (belonging to the percussion family) as a major musical instrument for song compositions in the super hit film ‘Khazaanchi’ (1941), it has become an inseparable part of Hindi film songs. In fact in the 50s, prominent music directors started engaging specialist dholak players in the songs’ orchestration. The introduction of dholak in the Hindi film songs has made some of them so rhythmic that a music lover consciously or unconsciously replays the rhythmic beats with his fingers on whatever place he find near him, be it on a sofa hand rest or on a table top or play it on any of the kitchen vessels as Bhagwan did in ‘ kismet ki hawa kabhi garam kabhi naram’ (Albelaa-1951).

Given that during most of the 50s, C Ramchandra was very favorably inclined towards Lata, I was just wanting to find out what is the earliest that he had used the voice of Asha Bhosle. I did a quick scan of the films for which C Ram has composed music, in the Geet Kosh, from 1950 onwards. And unless I made a mistake in my scanning, the film ‘Meenaar’ in 1954 seems to be the first time that Asha Bhosle has sung for C Ramchandra. If not mistaken, then this is likely the first such occasion.

ALBELAA (1951) was a musical blockbuster produced and directed by Master Bhagwan. In my childhood days, I had quite often heard ‘shaam dhale khidki tale tum seeti bajaanaa chhod do’ but none of the other songs from the film. I saw this film for the first time on Doordarshan in early 80s. Thereafter, I must have seen this movie a couple of times after I bought VCD of this film last year. This was Bhagwan’s first venture for a big budget film after producing and directing some low budget C grade films. The film was the third highest box office grosser of 1951 ranking after ‘Aawaraa’ and ‘Baazi’. It was an amazing feat for Bhagwan to achieve a box office success with this film despite having a run of the mill story ( probably based on his own life), a lacklustre direction and a non-conventional lead actor like him. The credit goes to the film’s foot tapping songs which became a craze those days and are still popular with the new generation as well.

“Sargam” (1950) was a Filmistan production. It was directed by P L Santoshi and the starcast included names like Raj Kapoor, Rehana, Om Prakash, Mumtaz Ali, Paro, Ratan Kumar, Chandabai, Rajendra, David Abraham, Tabassum, Radha Krishnan, Samson, Vijayalaxmi, Ramsingh, S. L. Puri, Sudesh etc.

“Nausherwan e Adil” (1957) was a Minerva Movietone presntation. It was produced and directed by Sohrab Modi. This movie had Raj Kumar, Mala Sinha, Sohrab Modi, Naseem, Bipin Gupta, Murad, Shammi, Amirbano etc in it.

“Meenar” (1954) is a movie which had Bharat Bhushan, Beena Roy, Pran, Sheila Ramani, Pratima Devi etc in its star cast. This movie has been all but forgotten by now.
