July 18th is an important date in the life of atulsongaday.me. Actually it marks the eve of the birth of the blog itself. I wonder what must have been Atul ji’s sphere of activity on the day prior to this date in the year 2008 when the blog was launched. Last year on this date we were on a countdown to reach our song number 10,000. With this post, we stand at 11,295.

It is just past midnight. It continues to be chillingly cold here in Delhi. The standoff is ongoing in the struggle with the beckoning blankets, as the mind is trying its best to continue staying at the keyboard and thwart all the enticements of a cozy quilt. So far so good.

Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 19

(1980 – Solo)

It was 1980 that we lost this precious human being and an inimitable, pure and natural artist, to the directions of the Power that we humans do not understand. His gift of the voice and emotional empathy was bestowed by Him, and He chose to call back this endowment to the humanity. With all the hindsight and life’s experience we do understand the inevitability of this event, and our inability to do anything about it. Nothing but resigned acceptance is what we can offer. But in Rafi Sb’s case, one question does keep nagging, with regret – ‘Did it have to be so soon?’. Just at 56 years of age. And a voice that simply did not age at all. Nahm ji had commented a few days back on one of the songs – Rafi Sb’s voice is sounding younger than the actor who is performing on screen (it was Dharmendra, in film ‘Dharamveer’ from 1977).

Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 11

(1976 – Solo)

As I am checking the list of songs from 1976, I find this gem of a ‘naat’ (Islamic religious song) rendered by Rafi Sb. The film is ‘Sangraam’, directed by Harmesh Malhotra. The words are written by Gauhar Kanpuri and the music is by Bhappi Lahiri. ‘Sangraam’ is a film that is not in memory otherwise. The films that I remember from that year are ‘Chitchor’, ‘Hera Pheri’ and ‘Chalte Chalte’. And yes, ‘Fakiraa’ and ‘Dus Numbri’. I remember I had seen ‘Chitchor’ and ‘Hera Pheri’ on the big screen.

By 1970s, Rajshree Productions had hit upon a cost effective winning formula. In their movies, they would ensure that the story and music was the king and actors were non entities. They would hire newcomers in lead roles and make them work for pittance. As for music, they would hire music directors who were prepared to work for less fee. Their standard music director throughout 1970s was Ravindra Jain, who doubled up as the lyricist too. His music was the single biggest reason for the success of these movies as far as I am concerned. personally I felt the same way that a mouse felt when he heard the music of the pied Piper. whenever I heard the music of a Rajshree Productions movie, I felt like going to the movie hall showing that movie.
