Today’s song is from a 85 year old film Haar jeet-1940.

I find so many similar film titles in the film index that sometimes I feel like taking up this issue also as a “Same title Confusions” problem. Luckily there is one trick to clarify among these similar titles and that is its year of making ! Therefore it is necessary that whenever a film is mentioned, its year must also be mentioned to avoid the possible ‘Same Title Confusion’ ! There were 4 films of this title made in 1940, 1954, 1972 and 1990. In addition, I also found 2 more Har jeet films which were left incomplete.

1940 was a period when New Theatres, the makers of Haar jeet-1940, were in top speed and in its Golden period. The film was directed by Amar Mullick. Music was by R.C.Boral-considered as the ‘Grand Old man’ of film music in India. His contribution to the film industry is unforgettable.

Today’s song is from the film Haar jeet-154. This is the last song of this film to be discussed here.

Produced by G.A.Thakur, the film was directed by J.Rampal. The music was by S.D.Batish. The cast of the film included Shyama, Suresh, Sunder, Shyam lal, Heeralal, Madan Puri, Amar and others. Surprisingly, Batish had used 6 singers for 7 songs of this film – Ashima Banerjee, Geeta Dutt, Mubarak begum, Lata Mangeshkar, S.D.Batish and Talat Mehmood. Singer Ashima Banerjee was like a Comet. She came to the Bombay film world and after a brief sojourn, went back to Bengal.

When one looks at Hindi movies, one realises that the dominant genres of Hindi movies keep changing with time. In the early decades of 1930, fantasy movies and mythological movies ruled the roost. From late 1940s, melancholic movies became popular.

In 1950s, crime movies, inspired from similar movies made in the west, began to be made by Hindi movie makers. Then we saw lost and found stories in 1960s, and angry young man stories in 1970s and so on.

One notices that the music in crime movies of 1950s were also inspired from west. In some cases, tunes were lifted from western tunes. Since information age was nowhere in sight those days unlike now so movie makers could get away from plagiarisation with impunity in most cases. Even otherwise, western instruments came into usage in Hindi movie magic that were used to create not only western style music but also desi style music.

A dream within a dream. . .

In the growing up years, there is a whole generation I am sure, or actually, multiple generations, that have grown up learning about the American society and the lifestyle from the books of the author Harold Robbins. I remember, in my school years, his books were a taboo, generally carried around and exchanged, their cover pages obscured by plain paper or even newspaper wrappers. And yet, very avidly devoured by the young minds oh so keen to learn about the American way of life. But of course, the clandestine attraction was the common perception that his novels contained explicitly “hot” passages. And hence all the hush-hush and the covert operations to read his novels surreptitiously on the bus, while traveling back from school in the afternoons (of course, the morning trip traveling TO the school, one was always busy preparing for this test or that, or even completing homework assignments 😀 😀 ), or very late in the night, using various mechanisms to illuminate the pages in an otherwise darkened room. 🙂

Recently our dear Kamath Saab shared the song ‘Mast Pawan Shaakhen Lehraayen’ from the 1940 movie ‘Haar Jeet’. And seeing that post I immediately recalled sharing one song from the film having the same title – ‘Haar Jeet’ and released in 1972. I thought that a song from this ‘Haar Jeet’ (1972) was already posted on the blog. Or maybe it was discussed in some post or mentioned in comments on the blog.

The year 1940 can be regarded as a benchmark year for Hindi film industry to assess its progress in the talkie era as it marked about a decade since talkies came into being. Although studio systems (in which artists were on the payrolls of the studios) continued, slowly the star system was evolving in which the star actor commanded the salary acccording to his success rate in box office collections. During this period, actors with star values emerged. They commanded good salary from their respective studios to ward off poaching by the competing film production companies. Films with K L Saigal, Prithviraj Kapoor, Chandramohan, Surendra, Motilal, Ashok Kumar, Durga Khote, Madhuri, Sabita Devi, Kanan Devi, Shobhana Samarth, Leela Chitnis, Naseem Bano etc were expected to be box office hits.

I had the good fortune of talking over the phone to Shri Srinivas Chary, courtesy Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh, in the last week as well as this week. Srinivas ji was a Mumbaikar till the middle of the 1970s when he decided to settle down in Chennai. He is a member of RMIM (Rec. Music. Indian. Music). During our talk, Srinivas ji told me about RMIM meeting held in April 2006 at Bangalore wherein, among others things, 2 CDs containing some rare film and non-film songs of Talat Mehmood were presented. He was associated with the preparation of the CDs and he contributed some of the songs of Talat Mehmood from his collections. He said that songs from Talat CDs as well as songs from some other CDs are available on Dr Surjit Singh’s Website.

“Haar Jeet”(1954) is an obscure movie and most people know nothing about this movie.

Since it is an obscure movie so it follows that Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our inhouse encyclopaedia must be having all the information on this movie. Here is what he has to say about this movie:

The past two three weeks have been somehow overtly busy and a run around for me, and I must apologize that I have not been very regular in writing and posting. Just too many things seem to be happening on the domestic and professional front, and time is at a premium. Being connected to email most of the time, I do follow the posts on email, all the day, but have been delinquent in responding regularly.
