Today’s song is from the ” Kam sune – Unsune ” film Pensioner-1954.
When you say that ‘Colgate is No. 1 Toothpaste’, it does not mean that everyone in India uses Colgate. It only means that the majority of people use Colgate and hence it is called No. 1 toothpaste. The decade of the 1950s was known as’ The Golden Era of Film Music’. It did not mean that there were no films with mediocre or poor music. It only means maximum films had wonderful music. In this decade there were few – only few – films whose music was not famous, for whatever reasons. Today’s film was one such film.
In the war period from 1939 to 1945, the British Government in India had coaxed the filmmakers to make films which would help the war efforts. These were called ‘ Propaganda Films’ and the Government gave special subsidies and other concessions ( like extra quota of Raw Film at control rates) to the producer. During the 1950s the Indian Government wanted to boost the ‘Small Savings’ habit among the citizens. Some films were made upholding this scheme. Today’s film Pensioner-1954 was one such film.

There’s nothing much to write about this movie except what Sudhir Ji has written in his post. The film is produced under the banner of Hari Darshan Chitra, Bombay and is directed by Dutta Dharmadhikari. The cast of actors as per Geet Kosh listings is Bunty, Kumar Sen, Meena Rai, Paresh Kumar, Dharmesh, Akhil Kumar, Ved Bhushan, Santosh Virdi, Gopal Dutt, KS Pawar, Vinod Verma, Ang Pal, Uma Khosla, Gold Flake, Tuntun, and Sarita.

Today’s song is from the film Gul E Bakavali-1963. It is an imaginary story with an Arabic background. The song I am presenting today is an Islamic Hamd – a religious song in praise of Allah. It is a form of expression to acknowledge and honour Him. There is a difference between Hamd – which is directed towards The God and a Naat – which focusses on The Prophet.

Today’s song is from a Costume C grade film -‘Shah Behram’-1955.
The film was made by Producer Mulkraj Bhakari, under the banner of Baharistan Productions, Bombay. The film was directed by a veteran of such genres – Nanubhai Vakil. He was not just a ” Vakil” (An Advocate) by name, but including him, most of the elders of his family were B.A.LL.B. advocates. It is another matter that he was inclined to make a name for himself in the film industry rather than practising Law in courts.

Hullo Atuldom
1st August is the date when Meena Kumari was born as Mahjabeen Bano.
She had a career spanning 33 years, starting as a child artist in 1939. At a young age of 5 she became the bread-winner of her family. Fans of Meena Kumari know that she went on to adult roles from 1946 when she appeared in ‘Bachchon Ka Khel’ & ‘Duniya Ek Sarai’. ‘Baiju Bawra’ & ‘Parineeta’ helped her gain prominence as an actress. Till the late 1950s she had acted in films ranging from drama to comedy to fantasy before “Chiraag Kahaan Roshni Kahan”; “Main Chup Rahungi” & such other movies earned her ‘tragedy-queen’ sobriquet. Personally I liked her ‘chulbuli’ characters in “Miss Mary”, “Kohinoor”, “Azaad” etc.
