Making movies is a business venture, and that too a risky business venture where there is no assurance of earning a profit on one’s investment. In movie making, the producer typically raises the finances, gigns up director, technicians, artists etc and makes a film. Later he gets the movie released in theatres. If he is lucky, the movie may do well, but in most cases the movie may fail to attract movie wathers and the investment made in making that movie goes down the drain.

I was a bit surprised to note that Mohammed Rafi had to struggle for nearly 5 years to establish him as one of the leading male playback singers in Hindi film industry. It is said that he recorded his first song for a Punjabi film as early as 1942. It took him another 2 years to get his first song in a Hindi film ‘Pahele Aap’ (1944), a duet with Shyam thus beginning his long lasting collaboration with Naushad. It took another year for him to get an opportunity to sing his first solo song ‘ae dil-e-nakaam tamanna’ in ‘Hamara Sansaar’ (1945) followed by ‘teraa khilonaa toota baalak’ in ‘Anmol Ghadi’ (1946), the latter one under the baton of Naushad.

Not all Hindi movies are made by movie makers with deep pockets. There are people who dream of making movies even if they do not have the financial muscle for that. They would look for out of work artists and sign them for free or a pittance, and ask them to convince other out of work artists for free too.
