Today (2 october) is Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. Mahatma Gandhi (2 october 1869- 30 january 1948), who is regarded as the Father of the nation was arguably one of the the greatest and most influential human beings of the modern era of mankind. Two of the movements that he initiated had Global application. They are Anti colonialism and Anti apartheid. Another major movement that he championed was anti touchability against a uniquely Indian social practice. All these movemnents have today become full fledged movements with official approval.

This movie had Mehmood, Helen, Bhushan Tiwari, Preeti Ganguli,Naushir Khatau, Baby Ginny(Mehmood`s real life daughter-Debut role), Anwar Hussain, Nazir Hussain, Mohan Chhoti, Sundar, Mukri, Leela Mishra, Nana Palsikar, Polson,
Ruby Myers(senior Sulochana),Shyama, Chaand Usmani, Shobhana etc in it. In addition, this movie had several leading stars in friendly appearances. They were Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Nutan, Randhir Kapoor, Rishi kapoor, Vinod Mehra, Rakesh Roshan etc.

When one talked of a movie called “Sargam” in my younger days, the only movie of this name that I was aware of was the Rishi Kapoor Jayaprada movie of 1980. Later I came to know that a movie of the same title was released in 1950 too which was a Filmistan production. “Sargam” (1950) was directed by P L Santoshi. The movie had Raj Kapoor, Rehana, Om Prakash, Mumtaz Ali, Paro, Ratan Kumar, Chandabai, Rajendra, David Abraham, Tabassum, Radha Krishnan, Samson, Vijayalaxmi, Ramsingh, S. L. Puri, Sudesh etc in it.

This song “Ganga Mein dooba na Jamuna mein dooba” was an extremely popular song of its time, viz 1970s. I was one of those who lived listening to this song and humming it too, all the while remaining totally oblivious to the details of this song. With time, this song ran its course and was forgotten with time.
