People in most fields are always on the look out for the holy grail of their field. In case of Hindi movie making, it is a formula that would succeed at the box office. And interestingly, this success formula keeps changing from time to time. Moreover, not every movie following the same formula succeeds at the box office.

“Jal Bin Machhli Nritya Bin Bijli”(1971) was a V Shantaram Productions movie. It was produced and directed by V Shantaram movie. The movie had Ravindra, Vasant Parekh, Minal, Abhijeet, Vastala Deshmukh, Iftekhar, Sandhya, Dina Gandhi, Raja Paranjpe, Nanda, Birbal, Praveen Kumar, Sushant Ray etc in it. The movie was a resounding failure at the box office. Even its songs failed to climb to the popularity stakes. Indians in the past decades tended to suffer from low self esteem, because India as a country was a “developing nation”, a euphemism for a poor and underdeveloped nation. It was not uncommon for movies to reflect that. Tragedy movies did well at the box office. The hero typically would get bashed up at the hands of the villain throughout the movie.

Last week, I suddenly felt an urge to write an article on Shashi Kapoor whom I admire for being a different Kapoor from his two illustrious brothers – Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor. He may not have the genius and business acumen of Raj Kapoor nor have the yahoo image of Shammi Kapoor. But he scored over his two illustrious brothers in that he was the most handsome among them. This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Yesterday, Atul ji has posted a song whose lyrics were sent in by Prakash ji. The song –“Kaise Mitti Ke Maadho Se Paala Padaa” . On screen, it is Leena Chandavarkar trying to woo an apparently unwilling Sanjeev Kumar who seemingly does not understand the moves she is making and the words she is singing. Or maybe he does, but is choosing to remain aloof and unconcerned. I remember this song from the radio listening days, but I saw the video only today. And as soon as the song started, and Leena Chandavarkar started to sing out her complaints to her ‘beau fatale’, I immediately recalled another song – same era, same pair of actors on screen, the same complaint. Well one difference, the mood in the song that I refer to, is a bit more explicit, and a bit more demanding.
