In my last article, I had made a passing reference to the film, ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ (1992) in the context of the prelude music of one of the songs of the film which is the inspiration for the prelude music of the song that was discussed in the aforesaid article. This film suddenly reminded me of its director, Mansoor Khan who had successfully directed ‘Qayaamat Se Qayaamat Tak’ (1988) and some more. From his filmography, he directed his last film, ‘Josh’ (2000) and was the co-producer of ‘Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa’ (2008). It is a rare instance for a film director who has successfully directed four films in a row and vanished from the film industry. It was an interesting quest for me to know as to why he shunned the film industry.

Here is this wonderful creation of Majrooh Sultanpuri and OP Nayyar Sb which is now used once again in the film ‘Bombay Velvet’ of 2015.

The film was produced by Ashok Kumar, under his own banner Ashok Kumar productions, Bombay. As expected in those days, the film’s director was Vasant Joglekar and the Music Director was Arun Kumar Mukherjee. He was Ashok Kumar’s cousin (their mothers were sisters). The cast was Ashok Kumar, Usha Kiran, Shashikala, Anup Kumar, Agha, Nazir hussain, leela Mishra, Iftikhar, Sumati Gupte, Aroop Kumar (son of Ashok Kumar) and others. The songs were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri (1st October 1919- 25th May 2000) & Saawan Kumar Tak. Usha Khanna (d.o.b. 7th October 1941) was the music director. Asha Bhonsle, Sulakshana Pandit, Mohd Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor, Suresh Wadkar & Usha Khanna (herself) were the playback singers.

Readers of this blog are aware that this year is the ‘birth centenary year’ of the legendary singer Mukesh (22.07.1923 – 27.08.1976). Earlier we had a few posts on the blog for the birth centenary celebrations. When our respected Sudhir ji and Mahesh ji started presenting posts with Mukesh songs I was under the impression that there will be post on every day starting from 22nd July to 27th August (which is Mukesh’s Remembrance Day) since many Mukesh songs are yet to be posted here. That did not happen. But there were some Mukesh related posts till his birth anniversary …
