It is that time of year.

It is with mixed emotions that I write this post.
No, it’s not quite what you’re thinking. Usually “mixed emotions” involve an element of happiness, tempered with sadness. Like parents sending their son or daughter abroad for higher studies. On one hand, they’re happy for their child’s future, on the other there’s an element of sadness that they will be separated by a considerable amount of distance and time.

“Sunayna” (1979) was a Rajshree Productions movie. It was produced by Tarachand Barjatya and directed by Hiren Nag. The story of the movie was inspired from Charlie Chaplin’s “City lights” (1931). I must say that I quite loved watching the movie in a then newly built mini sized movie hall in Ranchi in 1979. One of the lasting impressions of this movie in my mind include the extremely hummable title song viz. Sunayna sunayna..aaj in nazaaron ko tum dekho aur main trumhe dekhte huye dekhoon. The other lasting impression was Jagdeep playing a fellow jailbird of Naseeruddin Shah who tries to help Naseeruddin Shah escape out of jail. Instead of Naseeruddin Shah, Jagdeep finds himself out of the jail. And from then onwards Jagdeep tries very hard to go back inside the jail, but to no avail. 🙂

Bollywood songs of 1990s and onwards do not quite strike the same chord with me as the songs of earlier decades do. But there are some songs of even 1990s onwards that are just wonderful to listen to.

Rajshri productions had hit upon a sureshot formula for success in the decade of 1970s. They would make movies for a small target audience who wanted to watch love stories full of nice songs and heartwarming plots. This was a winning formula because love stories by definition required new faces ( and as such Rajshri Productions saved money on hiring big name actors). In these movies, story and music were the real stars and Rajshri productions had built up a small loyal audience for their movies.

It is one Bollywood movie that is inspired from a western movie and novel. But unlike most such inspired movies, this movie improves and enhances the original and comes up with a memorable tale that has the ability to move just about any person who has watched it.
