Hullo to Atuldom

October was slightly busier than normal. I have missed a few birthdays -dates which I always try to write for. I missed Kishore Kumar’s anniversary, and birthdays of Hema Malini, Ashok Kumar, Vinod Khanna, Smita Patil, Shammi Kapoor and a few for which I had made mental notes for – Sunny Deol, Kadar Khan etc. But unless I write oops! type, mental notes remain in the mind. And even mere typing is not enough I should send it as email too, technology has not yet advanced to the level that one person can read another’s thoughts and convert it into a post. Thank god that there is a small amount of privacy left in these modern technological times.

But my post today (26 october 2018) is not to cry about technology. Today is one of those dates in October which I don’t like to miss; at least for the last 3 years.

Today we remember the great son this soil Sardar Bhagat Singh (28th September 1907 – 23rd March 1931), on his birth anniversary.

We remember him for his bravery, courage, determination and supreme sacrifice made for a cause of the people, the people of this country.

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 64# Singer – Kishore Kumar

In my opinion, Kishore Kumar’s voice reached a different and special plane altogether during late 1960s as compared to his voice prior to earlier years i.e. pre ‘Padosan'(1968) and ‘Aradhana’ (1969). He retained that “something special” in his voice for the rest of his career. His voice was at its versatile peak during this phase of his career.

hullo Atuldom

So, it is the new year. I have not made any resolutions, as usual, just taking life as it chooses to unfold itself. Anyway, it has always been my way of living. People who are connected with me on WhatsApp must have seen my status message- “Kal kya hoga kis ko pata” I also subscribe to the thought “abhi zindagi ka le lo mazaa”. (this is from a song by Gulshan Bawra)
My todays post is a song from the 1994 release “Aag” starring Govinda, Shilpa Shetty, Sonali Bendre (in a special appearance) with Kader Khan, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Shakti Kapoor, Goga Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Suresh Chatwal etc. etc. in the supporting cast. This movie was directed by K. Ravi Shankar and released in August 1994. This was a change of image for Govinda in the sense that it had him play a serious character.

Hullo to all Atulites

Today’s birthday girl was a Miss India winner in the year when my family got a TV for the first time ever. Prior to that whatever I have seen on TV (read Doordarshan) was either in other people’s houses or my chachu’s home. (As I have previously mentioned on many occasions. Those days nobody minded other people’s kids or adults too for that matter, coming in to see TV) I remember having got used to seeing the live relay of the Republic day parades, Filmfare Awards Nites, test matches, Wimbledon and opening ceremonies of Olympics or Asiad etc. They had a different charm to them specially when there would be no repeat telecasts and we used to either wake up early or sit up late to see live relays of overseas events.

A very Happy Holi to 9th holi today (13 march 2017) on this blog. And every holi we have Atul posting songs for the occasion. We have approximately 50 songs to celebrate holi. So does that mean we are out of songs? No, not at all! How can that happen? As long as we have Hindi Movies and as long as they have songs in them we can be sure of at least one holi song a year if not more. Oh, I seem to be echoing Sudhirji’s thoughts from his 2015’s holi post. But that is the truth of the matter. Holi will never go out of fashion in Bollywood. The only thing that might change is that people will request others to have dry holi this year as many parts of the country are facing drought conditions. And still others will opt for using organic colours that are less harmful to the skin etc. But what about the general public of the country who cannot afford the expensive organic stuff they will stick to the traditional gulal in various hues.

Readers of this blog might now be familiar with a certain pattern of posts on this blog.

While there are posts which focus largely on the song, or the film, or even personal anecdotes, one common pattern is the celebration of anniversaries and milestones, in a post.

The anniversaries are our way of paying tribute to the artiste concerned. Whoever the artiste, whether a composer or lyricist or actor, whatever his level of fame in the industry, we try to remember and honour him on his birth or death anniversary.

Hullo to all the guys and gals of Atuldom

The writing bug has hit me after a long time.

Had an enjoyable January. To begin with had a quiet ushering in of the New Year followed by birthday time. So each had a small outing attached to it.

Then the most eventful Sunday….17th January 2016. A day which was under planning since October 2015 when we had a mail from Guruji of his impending visit to Bangalore via Hosur and Hyderabad. This time the group met at a new venue— Residence of Gajendra Khanna. Now here I feel like mentioning that I am floored by his collection of Vinyl Records and the number of WORKING TURNTABLES or Record Players as I used to call them as a kid. Another thing that should be mentioned is his wonderful idea of how to get more people to enjoy an event and the thought behind getting us live on YOUTUBE that day. We went live that day at about 11. And instantly Avinashji, Ben Katie, Atulji YYIIPPEEEE master and a few of Gajendra’s friends (I don’t know exactly how many or who all) hooked on to us. The (physical) attendees were Shenoyji, Arunji (Guruji), Rajaji, Gajendraji and a group of music lovers whom I got acquainted with for the first time that day.

I grew up in a small town where everybody knew everybody and also knew each other’s ‘kartoots’. I was young enough not to understand some conversations of grownups. On one occasion when I was at a fruit sellers shop, with my father, a prominent person came to buy mangoes. It was beginning of the mango season and they were very dear. The shop keeper asked him “Sir, is it for house no. 1 or for house no. 2?” I looked at my father and he warded off my questioning look and started examining mangoes on the rack.

Good day to all in atuldom

So today’s post is not giving any classic vintage rare song. It is one of the run of the mill (chalu, chalta hai) kind of song. It is written by Sameer who has written many traditionally lyrical and poetic songs. But I consider it must have been a little difficult for such a person to write “a not so purist” kind of song. People would consider it the depths of despair to even think of it as a song. But in the words of my daughter it is a very realistic song. A normal middle class person can only promise a Pepsi or coke to his girlfriend. He can only find solitude in a crowded theatre. Lets agree that in the 1960s,70,80s etc that is where we used to encounter most couples who were in love. So what is wrong in expressing it explicitly in a song. To top it where is solitude in our cities now a days?
