A couple of years back, I had written for the Blog, articles on a few of Hindi film dancers/character actress which included Mohana Cabral, Naaz, Minoo Mumtaz, Heera Sawant, Sheila Vaz, Rani and Jeevankala. In this article, I take up for writing on one of the prominent dancers of Hindi films during 1970s and 1980s who also did supporting roles of varying types. The dancer/actor is Jayshree Talpade, popularly known as Jayshree T. I had watched her the first time in the film, ‘Chanda Aur Bijli’ (1969). This was the period and another couple of years more when I was active in watching Hindi films in the theatres, preferably during the first week of the release of the films and almost every weekends. After watching her dance performances in about a dozen films in 1970-72 with bits of supporting roles, I can say that just as Helen was a successor to Cuckoo, so is Jayshree T a successor to Helen. Interestingly, Jayshree T and her elder sister, Meena T had no intention of working in the films as none of their family members were connected with the film industry. How Jayshree T got the entry into Hindi films without much of a struggle is the story that will get unfolded as I discuss her profile.

I count the minutes the days the hours. . .
I count the stars. . .

Days, then weeks, then months – on to years and decades. The march of time incessantly continues. Superimposed on this unremitting progression is a calendar that allows us to measure passages of time. The philosophers of yore had no tools other than observation and contemplation, by which they used to measure natural phenomena. And then this measurement and contemplation over long periods of time uncovered patterns of celestial movements which tied into the the design of changing climate on earth. And thus was born the concept of calendar and measures of years. Over a period of time it got refined into a detailed structure that we now see as twelve months and 365 days. Of course with further refinements of leap years and leap centuries to make accurate adjustments to synchronize the this framework with the precise movement of Sun in our skies.

‘Daakiyaa daak laaya!! Daakiyaa daak laaya!!’

No, I was not that much aware of this song in my childhood when I was a school going child, but I remember the characteristic ringing of the ‘cycle bell’ which signalled the arrival of the ‘Postman’ on our door steps.

When I think of Hindi Film Industry, I always ask a question to myself. Why was it that so many successful and talented artistes died so unceremoniously and in tragic circumstances ? Why did those who achieved unsurpassed stardom have such unhappy and sad ends to their lives ?

The one voice in the Hindi cinema world that is so different from any others. The one voice that can only be characterized as soulful and naturally so. The sound of this soft voice seems to be coming from great depth. t not a deep bass, or a booming sound. Just a soft voice, moving very easily and comfortably, rising from deep caverns. Unassuming and soothing as it reaches out to the listeners, it is one voice that caresses, soothes and comforts in a way that no other voice can. No matter what the song be, when sung by Mukesh, it seems to get an unexpected ambience and comes alive, as no other voice can make happen. There is a touch of melancholy that rings even in the songs of zest and happiness, that is the hallmark of his singing. Many more such voices have come and will come. But none will be able to connect the sound with the heart as Mukesh could.
