Hullo Atuldom

“Dosti Dushmani” (release date 31st October 1986) was directed and produced by T. Rama Rao. It had the team of Anand Bakshi- Laxmikant- Pyarelal giving us five songs that had Mohammad Aziz, Suresh Wadkar, Shailendra Singh, Kavita Krishnamurthy, S. Janaki & S.P. Balasubramaniam as playback singers.

Jeetendra, Rishi Kapoor & Rajnikanth played fast-friends (soulmates) with Pran & Sowcar Janaki, who are the biological parents of Jeetendra (in the film), being the anchors in the life of the friends. Bhanupriya, Kimi Katkar & Poonam Ddhillon were the ladies in the lives of the heroes. Amrish Puri, Shakti Kapoor, Kadar Khan, Asrani, Shafi Inamdaar & Gurbachan form the supporting cast.

This film was a remake of the Telugu film “Mugguru Mithrulu” (1985). The Telugu film was also remade in Kannada as “Brahma Vishnu Maheshwara” (1988).

I have seen the film, in parts, whenever it shows on some satellite television channel. I have seen that Jeetendra is forced into a fake marriage with Bhanupriya to shield Poonam Dhillon, who is Rajnikanth’s wife, from defamation or some such thing. In this fake marriage, Rishi Kapoor, Pran & Sowcar Janaki are the co-conspirators. Then there is an angle of Kimi Katkar, who has an axe to grind against Amrish Puri, falling in love with Rishi Kapoor. Plus, we come to know that Bhanupriya & Rajnikanth are siblings & Amrish Puri is their father who had abandoned the family at the start of the film. Additionally, Rajnikanth had got separated from his family & was fostered by Pran. What an uncomplicated masala film!!!!

This film is making it’s debut on the occasion of the 75th birthday of actor Rajnikanth who has a cult, God-like status among his fans particularly in South India. He has acted in films of all four South Indian languages though the number of Malayalam films is only one or two. His name appears in the credits of a Bengali film too, as ‘Guest Appearance’. He has acted in around 25/26 Hindi films. He has also produced & wrote screenplay for a few films (learnt this today)

Rajinikanth was born as Shivaji Rao Gaikwad on 12 December 1950, in a Marathi family, in Bangalore, Mysore State (present day Karnataka). His mother was a homemaker and his father, Ramoji Rao Gaekwad, was a police constable. He was the youngest of four siblings; he has two older brothers & a sister.

A fact about his early life, which is not well – known (or I should say I learnt today) is that his brother enrolled him at the Ramakrishna Math. Here, he was taught Vedas, tradition & history and also began acting in plays at the Math. His aspiration towards theatre grew at the Mathh and was once given an opportunity to enact the role of Ekalavya’s friend from the Hindu epic Mahabharata. His performance in the play received praise from the Kannada poet D. R. Bendre.

Upon completion of his school education, Rajinikanth took up several jobs including that of a coolie, before getting a job in the Bangalore Transport Service as a bus conductor. He continued to take part in plays after the Kannada playwright Topi Muniappa offered him a chance to act in one of his mythological plays. He decided to take up an acting course in the newly formed Madras Film Institute after coming across an advertisement. During his stay at the institute, he was noticed by the Tamil film director K. Balachander. Balachander provided Rajinikanth with his stage name to avoid confusion with fellow actor Sivaji Ganesan. The director advised Rajnikanth to learn to speak Tamil, a recommendation that he quickly followed. Although he can read the language, he cannot write in it. (Me too, I can read the language with some difficulty but not write it. I think I am qualified to be Rajni Saar’s fan. 🙂 )

Rajinikanth played supporting and “villainous” roles in most of the films released during the initial years of his career with lead roles which were few & far-between. His first film as one of the main leads, in Tamil came in 1978 in a remake of ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’. He first played a positive character in Telugu in 1977. I am unable to find out which was his first film as a positive lead in Kannada. His Hindi debut came in 1983 with ‘Andhaa kanoon’.
Rajnikanth is married to Latha Rangachari & has two daughters – Aishwarya & Soundarya- both of whom are connected with the film industry. Aishwarya Rajnikanth is a film director & playback singer while Soundarya is a film producer/ director along with being a graphic designer. Soundarya was the first woman director to direct Rajnikanth in ‘Kochadaiiyaan’ (2014).

The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2016. He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2019, though he has won only one Filmfare award for best actor in 1984 for a Tamil film, IFFI (International Film Festival of India) conferred on him the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award this year- 2025.

Wish you a very Happy Birthday Rajnisaar (‘Thalaiva’ which translates as ‘leader’ but also used to mean ‘BOSS’). May you continue to entertain your fans. Stay Healthy. 🙂

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Happy Birthday to Shailendra Singh)#
——————————————-——————————

Today 4th October’2025 is the 74th birthday of Singer and actor Shailendra Singh. He was born on 4th October’1952 in Mumbai (Bombay then). Most of us are aware that Shailendra Singh made his debut as a singer with the movie ‘Bobby’ in ‘1973’ which was produced and directed by the great showman of Hindi Cinema Raj Kapoor.

The songs of ‘Bobby’ became very popular then and Shailendra Singh was nominated for the ‘Best Male Playback Singer’ for the song ‘main shaayar to nahin’. But the he didn’t win for that. He got his first acting break for the movie ‘Do Jaasoos – 1975’. (Later on, he acted in his father’s home production ‘Agreement-1980’, and he had done guest appearance in ‘Naukar-1979’ and Mehmood’s – ‘Janta Hawaldar-1979’. He acted in a Bengali film as a hero with Aparna Sen and the movie was ‘Ajosro Dhanyobaad (Many Many Thanks).

Hullo Atuldom

Has any follower of this blog seen the 1990 release “Amiri Garibi”? What about “Chhoti Si Mulaaqat”? Or a few of Jeetendra’s movies of the 1970s like “Jawaab”, “Dildaar” etc. where he plays a rustic/ villager who’s sole aim is to tame the haughty, city-educated daughter of the village zamindar; something on the lines of TAMING OF THE SHREW (a concept which the ladies/ females of this generation will strongly object to) Lastly, I would also like to draw the attention of the followers to “Amar Akbar Anthony” (1977).

Well I propose to introduce a song from the 1990 release “Amiri Garibi”. It was produced by Pradeep Sharma (a.k.a Tutu Sharma, also Padmini Kolhapure’s husband). Harmesh Malhotra was the director. Laxmi-Pyare were the music directors for songs written by Anand Bakshi. Shailendra Singh, Alka Yagnik, Kavitha Krishnamoorthy & Anuradha Paudwal were the playback singers used. Jeetendra, Rekha, Raj Babbar, Poonam Dhillon, Rishi Kapoor, Neelam Kothari, Om Shivpuri, Rohini Hattangadi, Urmila Bhatt, Sushma Seth, Jayshree Gadkar, Chand Usmani, Yunus Parvez, Guddi Maruti, & Shakti Kapoor and Pran were part of the starcast of this film. Tiku Talsania & Guddi Maruti were also in the film.

(Celebrating Pancham’s 86th Birth Anniversary 27.06.2025 – 10)
——————————————————————————————————

Celebrating Pancham’s music today on his 86th Birth Anniversary, we have a song from the 1985 movie ‘Sitamagar’ in this post. This song however was excluded from the movie but I am sure readers will enjoy listening to it. Readers may feel the same what I felt after listening to this song. This might be the only song where we have Shailendra Singh singing in a low baritone voice.

(Happy Birthday Mithun Chakravarty)

‘Taraana-1979’ was directed by Deepak Bahri for Chanda Pictures. It was presented by Rajshri Productions and produced by Tarachand Barjatya. Living upto the reputation of the production house this movie too gives us a clean, musical, family entertainer movie. This is a nice movie having a nice story line of ‘love’ and including sub-plots of ‘lost and found’ story, and ‘wealthy and poor’ conflict to it. The cast of this movie ‘Taraana-1979’ is Ranjeeta, Mithun Chakraborty, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Urmila Bhatt, Jayshree T., Sharat Saxena, and Om Shivpuri. They were supported by Yunus Parvez, Janki Das, Sundar, Bhagwan, Shakeel, Satyabhan Sinha, Naresh, Pardesi, Master Sandeep, Shobha Khote, Mala Jaggi, Uma Khosla, and Jagdeep. The story, screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Khalid & Narvi. Editing of this film was done by Mukhtar Ahmed.
