behti hui ye nadiyaa ghulte huey kinaare
koi to paar utre koi to paar guzre
I heard this recital by Meena Kumari for the first time ‘ Yoon teri rehguzar se deewana war guzre ‘ when Sudhir Sir’s post appeared in the blog, I was spell bound and could not stop hearing it for days on. The recital was so heart wrenching and full of sadness. I recorded the audio on my mobile and shared with all my friends.

aaye bhi wo
gaye bhi wo
khatm fasaana ho gayaa
Aisi kuchh baat hai ki, at the mention of Meena Kumari’s name, come to mind these lines written by DN Madhok (‘Namaste’, 1943). Born as Maahjabeen Bano in 1932, on screen in 1939, leading lady by 1950, won the first ever Filmfare award in 1952 (‘Baiju Baawra’), established tragedienne in 1953 (‘Daaera’), married to Kamaal Amarohi in 1952, separated from him in 1960, divorced in 1964, reunited in 1968, and then gone from this world in 1972. Just 40 years on this earth, and a career of thirty three years, ninety films, four Filmfare awards as best actress, and memorable string of powerful roles that made her a legend at an age and time in life when most of us are still finding our feet.

Writeup by Atul
————————–
So the eagerly awaited moment is here. It was planned to happen on 19 july 2014, on the sixth anniversary of the blog, but that was not to be and it has finally happened one day later. Paucity of time necessitated by urgent personal and even official engagements/ matters were the cause for this delay by one day. I also had to reluctantly defer three eagerly awaited writeups, viz introductory posts on M/s Arunkumar Deshmukh, Raja and Sudhir ji. They very graciously agreed to have their introductions deferred in view of the circumstances. I am very thankful for their understanding.
If one notices, the lion’s share of the writeups for the last few days have been done by Sudhir ji. He has been spending unimaginable hours on the blog for the last few days despite being tied up in his own personal and professional engagements. And this 10000th post is very much a result of his own initiative, meticulous research and hard work. My heartfelt thanks goes to Sudhir ji without whom this blog would not be what it is today.

Poets as singers may not be an uncommon expectation. Poets are known for their singing prowess in mushairas and in kavi sammelans. They are expected to present their verses in ‘tarrannum’. However, not many have ventured into singing in the films. It is quite strange, because they are the one’s who best know the words, their intent, and their meaning. They also have a fair idea about an underlying melody that hides behind the meter and rhyme that they have created. Lyricist DN Madhok was famous for providing a basic ‘dhun’ to the music directors, for every song he wrote. But still, one does not find many singing in the films in their own voice.

Today’s song is from a film called PARINAY-74, with music from a very talented Music Director- JAIDEV.
Now, I see some eyebrows raised, wondering why and how I have chosen a song from the 70s, because I generally talk about Films and Songs of 30s to 60s period only. But let me assure you that everything was not lost even after 1970. One could always find wonderful melodies here and there. Of course, the flow of such melodies had slowed down to a trickle, but still there were some sparks to be seen off and on.

A remembrance of today that must include her own expressions. Mahajabeen was an emotional personality, and as with all emotional people, there is an expression of the artist in ways more than one. A poetess in her own right, she is known to have been writing couplets and ghazals from a very young age. And when her life started on downhill glide, it was the drink that became a faithful companion, and it was her pen that became an outlet for her to tell the world, about her sorrows and her wounds.

Welcome all to the 7400th offering on this blog, which in my opinion should now be renamed as Atul-Six-Songs-a-Day (or maybe Atul-Six-Pack 🙂 :).)
The last century milestone bade a goodbye to 2012, which turned out to be a marvelous year, as far as the accomplishments of this blog and its contributors are concerned. And then, moving on, we are now at the next century milestone, yet once again. A mite longer than regular, this century took twenty four days to arrive, far above the normal rate of one century every sixteen or eighteen days. In the interim, there were some days of travel that took time out of Atul ji’s schedule. But no matter, the interest and participation in the blog continues unabated, with unflagging enthusiasm. And that, dear friends, is the most heartening feature of this blog.
