Between 1950s to 1970s, there was a series of British movies whose titles began with “Carry on..” . These movies were low budget comedy movies, whose comedy consisted of parody, farce, slapstick and double entendre, as wikipedia puts it. In India, I S Johar took a leaf out of this “Carry On” series movies, and he produced a few such movies whose titles began with “Johar in..”.

As we are trudging through lists of songs from various sources, as well as published songs on the internet, everyday there is a this ‘A haa’ moment when one comes across unheard, or heard-long-back-but-now-lost songs. These moments make this search and this journey worth its while. And the notable point is that these wonderful songs, now rare and obscure, mostly come from films which themselves are obscure. Their lack of success on the box office relegated their memory and the related information into depths of anonymity, and the music of such films also went the same way. The great consolation is projects like this blog, and the internet connectivity, that has provided the music lovers with a via media to publish and share the music that sits on forgotten vinyl records or music cassettes, probably stowed away in storage that is not often visited. These valued publications, and the ‘A haa’ moments they generate almost on a daily basis are a wonderful impetus for music lovers everywhere.

Another wonderful song, actually a qawwaali, that I discovered recently to be composed by Usha Khanna. The singer of this qawwaali is Jaani Baabu Qawwaal. When I had heard this qawwaali many year ago, and associating the name of Jaani Baabu with it, I had presumed this to be non-film offering, since Jaani Baabu is a professional mainstream qawwaali singer. Only recently, as I was selecting songs composed by Usha Khanna, for posting on this blog, I came across once again this wonderful qawwaali on YouTube, and then realized that it is actually from the film Do Khilaadi (1976).

1969 was the debut year for Bindu and Vinod Khanna was just one year into the industry (having his debut in the ‘Man Ka Meet’ (1968)). In personal life, Bindu was already a married lady by this time. As far as I can review her filmography, the film Nateeja (1969) is apparently the only film in which she has played the role of a leading lady. Having played small roles in Anpadh (1962), as the college going daughter of Mala Sinha, and a supporting role in Aurat (1967), 1969 was the year that that she arrived on the film scene with five releases to her credit, viz. Doli, Ittefaaq, Do Raaste, Aayaa Saawan Jhoom Ke and Nateeja. With a combination of both positive and negative roles, she made her mark this year, and embarked on a career that would make her famous as Mona Darling (Zanzeer, 1971). She played the oomph girl in many films (Kati Patang (1971), Hawas (1974), Imtihaan (1974) etc.), and she also did serious supporting roles in Abhimaan (1973), Chaitaali (1975), Arjun Pandit (1976) etc.

And this milestone is yet again marked with the consistency and continuity that has been unbroken for more than three years now. Much more than the number and the content of the posts, it is the perseverance and commitment to this effort, that are the outstanding qualities of maintaining the healthy pace of growth on this blog. And I present all kudos and praise to Atul ji, for spearheading this effort. A singular effort that is unparalleled in the cyber space. “Saajan Ki Saheli” (1980) is a movie which came up in the last stage of the Golden era of Hindi movie music. Those were the days when Disco music was becoming the rage and lyrics were losing their importance in such songs. During those days, we fortunately still had the kind of music in some movies that we had grown up to love all these decades. These were off beat movies, smaller budget movies, family values movies- in brief “non mainstream movies”.
