During the heyday of Radio in India in 1960s and 1970s, there were many popular radio programmes. There was one Radio programme called “Chayageet” on Vividh Bharati daily at 10 PM. The songs played in this song were typically old songs which I as a young kid regarded as boring. There were certain songs which I associated with this programmes. Typically, songs which were “bhoole bisre” and not so popular with the janta were played in this programme.

This song is a fun timepass song or tapori song, whichever classification suits you. The movie itself was a lighthearted movie. In this song, Sanjeev Kumar is kept in a prison and Kumkun launches a drive to free him. The drive consists of the tried and tested Bollywood formula viz singing a suductive song and the prison guards prove a pushover in the true Bollywood tradition. A song sung by Kumkum is all that it takes for the guards to lower their guards and Kumkum, with her associates manages to free Sanjeev Kumar.

We tend to discuss great songs from the past and go overboard discussing about the great message, great quality of melody, music, lyrics, voice etc contained in the songs. Here is one such song which has absolutely no pretentions of any kind about being a great song. It is a totally timepass song. This song was supposed to be there just to raise a few laughs in the movie. It indeed does so, but it has managed much more than that.

Rajesh Khanna, the superstar of late 1960s and early 1970s had fans swooning over his mannerisms. Whatever he touched turned to gold those days.

Maryada was a movie where he acted opposite the ageing heroine Mala Sinha. This movie, though largely forgotten now, had some awesome songs. One Mukesh song from this movie, viz “jubaan pe dard bhari daastaan chali aayi” has already appeared in this blog.

Listening to Binaca geetmala on wednesday nights is one of my most memorable moments of 1970s. If I am asked to name one song from Binaca geetmala that stands out in memory, then this particular song has to be that. This song appeared to be playing every time I listened to Binaca geetmala weekly programmes. If one looks dispassionately, neither this song, nor any other song from this movie figured in Binaca geetmala finals, but at that time, this movie and other songs from this movie appeared to be all over Binaca geetmala.

There are many occasions I am told that this particular song was so wonderful, and I nod my head sagely, though in reality I may not even have a clue what song is being talked about. For instance, I have been told that ” bol meri taqdeer me kya hai” from “Hariyali aur raasta” is a wonderful song. I nodded my head knowledgeably at this suggestion by Raja though I doubted I had ever heard this song.

I am sure no one recalls this 1978 movie called “Tumhaari Kasam”. In fact I do not think this movie was ever released in the parts of the country where I was growing up in 1970s. But I recall having heard this song and liking it.

Now that I have rediscoverd this song, after all of 30 years- and with the video of the song to boot, I realise that this beautiful song was picturised surprisingly well.

I have mentioned earlier that S D Burman tended to sing one song per movie and that one song was usually played at the beginning on the movie while the credits would roll in on the screen.

In some cases, S D Burman song would be played at the end while “The End” screen was on the verge of appearing and the audience were in a hurry to leave the movie hall.

In case one wants to learn driving from a driving school, the trainer takes the beginner on the road and gives him hands on training.
