“Jhoola” (1941) is a Bombay Talkies movies which had Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis in lead roles. This movie has a few songs that are remembered to this day.
It turns out that this movie also has a song that inspired another song nearly three decades later. The song of “Padosan”, viz. Ek chatur naar takes its inspiration from a song of “Jhoola” (1941). This “Jhoola” (1941) song is sung by Ashok Kumar, elder brother of Kishore Kumar who sang the “Padosan” (1968) song. In fact, “Jhoola” (1941) also had Mumtaz Ali in it, who was the father of Mehmood, who produced “Padosan”(1968).
The words of this song go “Ek chatur naar karkar singaar”. In fact, “Jhoola” (1941) seems to have other ingredients too that inspired “Padosan” (1968). For instance, Ashok Kumar finds that a pretty lady (Leela Chitnis) has come to live in a house opposite his house. And as we all know, “Padosan” (1968) too had the same situation in that movie.
Here in this song, Ashok Kumar is being watched by his padosans (Leela Chitnis and another lady). Ashok Kumar tries to give them the slip since he has to go and take bath. After successfully slipping away from their gaze, Ashok Kumar jumps onto his tattered khatiya which gives way under his weight and collapses. Ashok Kumar, unperturbed, proceeds to sing this song. Then he goes to the bathroom and sings this song again, but his pitch and laya changes since he is taking bath with cold water in winter conditions. The way Ashok Kumar’s voice shivers, and he is still determined to sing the song, is hilarious.
This song, which inspired the hilarious song of “Padosan” (1968) is written by Pradeep. Saraswati Devi is the music director.
