I am aware of several well known songs of “Baabul” (1950) that I have already discussed. I have now stumbled against a song that was unknown to me.

I keep confusing among movies with titles like “Ek Jhalak”, “Ek Nazar” ,”Ek Saal” etc. To add to my confusion, there are more than one movie with the same title. There have been at least two movies called “Ek Nazar”.

“Devtaa” (1956) was a Hindi movie produced by a South Indian production house and this movie had South Indian actors in lead roles. Gemini Ganeshan, Anjalai Devi, Vyjyanti Mala were the lead actors of this movie.

“Mirza Ghalib” (1954) was a movie based on the like of Great Urdu Poet Mirza Ghalib (1797-1869) who lived before the age of movies,but it is curious to note that he is in fact the lyricist of the songs of this movie that was produced some one century after his era.

“Niraalaa” (1950) had Dev Anand and Madhubala in lead roles. And the songs of this movie were wonderful to listen to. I have already discussed three songs from this movie.

In the olden and golden days of Hindi movies,great music was created not only in mainstream A grade movies, but also in lower budget B grade movies. There was a glut of talented music directors and even low budget movie producers were in a position to hire high class music directors.

Balmaa maane naa

“Opera House” (1961) was a B grade movie starring Ajit, B Saroja Devi, K N Singh, Maruti, Niranjan Sharma,Baalam etc. Many of the so called B grade movies of those days are indistinguishable from A grade stuff, except for low budget. And as far as the music of these movies were concerned. The music was invariably A grade.

Many people have known Nirupa Roy in mother roles and Ashok Kumar in elderly avuncular roles. But that is not how they began their careers. They both acted in lead roles when they were young.
