When it comes to titles for Hindi movies, most of these titles are one to three words long and then tend to have certain common Hindi/Urdu words in them. Combination of an adjective like Badi/Chhoti plus a noun for a woman itself may yield half a dozen or more titles. Then using words like Afsaanaa/fasaanaa/Kahaani either alone or in combination of a few other words leads to many titles. The possibilities are in fact endless.

Meena Kumari is typed cast as a tragedy queen in the minds of many movie watchers, but that is not entirely correct. For the first decade of her career, she played happy roles and it was only in the second decade of her career (viz 1960s) that she began to work in the tragedy roles.

Think of Sheikh Mukhtar, the hero of so many ‘Dada’ and ‘Ustad’ movies, the proverbial angry young man of the 50s and 60s ‘B’ screen Hindi movies long before Amitabh got that tag in the 70s and 80s. Now think of the same he-man in a skirt dress and bob cut hair? And dancing the twist, and pat-a-cake, no less?

Though I have heard about movies called “Daag”, I was not aware of a movie called “Bedaag”. But yes, there is indeed one such movie that was released in 1965. Unlike “Daag”(1952) which had Dilip Kumar and Nimmi and “Daag” (1973) which had Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore,”Bedaag”(1965) did not have the reigning superstar of the day in its cast. This movie had Manoj Kumar and Nanda in lead roles.

Mainstream A grade movie makers confined themselves to movies on mainstream subjects- viz boy falling into love with girl and singing songs routine. The tales from mythology, Folk tales, arabian nights tales etc , which were such rich sources for stories were regarded as commercially risky propositions and as such were not ventured into. It was left to small budget small time B grade movie makers to make movies on these subjects.

Golden era of Hindi movie music saw a plethora of musical talents that enriched Hindi movie music with their contribution. It is not that only big name artists contributed, even those artists who struggled to get opportunities and who worked in so called B grade movies also contributed their mite. some of them in fact deserved to getmany more assignments than what they finally ended up with.
