Ek mahal ho sapnon ka

Posted on: August 10, 2012

Though “Ek Mahal Ho Sapnon Ka” (1975) is a recent movie by the standards of this blog, this movie is not all that well known today. Perhaps a TV serial of the same name has hijacked the title and that has pushed the information about the movie of 1975 back.

This movie was produced by Devendra Goel. It was his last movie before he died. This movie had Ashok Kumar, Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Leena Chandawarkar, Deven Verma, David, Ramesh Deo, Achala Sachdev, Asha Chandra, Sanjana, Brahmachari, Birbal, Jagdish Raj, Hercules, Azaad Irani etc in it.

Though a couple of songs from this movie are available on internet, the title song of this movie is surprisingly elusive.

Here is the title song of this movie. The song is sung by Rafi and Lata. It is picturised on Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm.

ek mahal ho sapnon ka
phoolon bhara aangan ho
aur saath ho apno ka aa
ek mahal ho sapno ka

aa aa
aa aa aa aa

o

udte baadal farsh bane
aur dhund ki hon deewaaren
udte baadal farsh bane
aur dhund ki hon deewaren

chhat ke jhilmil taare
teraa meraa nam pukaaren
ek mahal ho sapnon ka aa
ek mahal ho sapno ka

sapnon ke is mahal mein
bikhre muskaano ke moti

mere pyar kee khushboo phailey,
tere roop ki jyoti
sapnon ke is mahal mein
bikhre muskaanon ke moti

mere pyar kee khushboo phaile,
tere roop ki jyoti
ek mahal ho sapnon ka aa
ek mahal ho sapnon ka

main tere nainon par kar doon,
apna sab kuchh waari
main teri baahon mein chhupkar,
bhooloon duniya saari

main tere nainon par kar doon,
apna sab kuchh waari
main teri baahon mein chhupkar,
bhooloon duniya saari

Sadly, Devendra Goel died soon afer this movie was released. It didn’t do well at all. The story was okay as was the star cast. The entire cast sleep walked from the first scene till the end. Even Ravi had lost his magic touch by then. The most heard song from ‘Ek Mahal Ho Sapnon Ka’ is the Lata number…”Dil me kisike pyar ka…” Ravi seemed to have scratched the bottom of the barrel as this song is based on his own superb tune and song…”Wo dil kahan se laaoo, teri yaad jo bhula de…” from ‘Bharosa’ sung so beautifully by Lata…..

Didnt he die in 1979 after making Aadmi Sadak Ka (1977) and Do Musafir (1978)?

Oh, God…Why this movie was flop? (although I have never heard of this movie)
Well, the movie has the right masala…Dharmendra, Sharmila, Lata&Rafi. Sahir&Ravi….
What went wrong?
So sad….:(

derubala~ji, the story, I’d heard, didn’t go down too well with the moviegoers of that time. Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore are in love, but circumstances compel her to marry Ashok Kumar an elderly wealthy widower. His daughter, Leena Chadavarkar develops a crush for Garam Dharam! I assume there must have been a collective scandalized, “Hai Ram! Ye kaisa zamana aya hai!” and the fate of the movie was sealed!
Talking of ‘Aadmi Sadak Ka’, the USP of the movie read, “First time in the history of movies, a Hindu acts as a Muslim and a Muslim acts as a Hindu!” The Hindu and Muslim in question being Shatrughan Sinha and Vikram (yes, he was a Muslim from Hubli!) The tagline was quite a silly one, if you ask me. And very wrong too! Decades before this movie, V Shantaram had made a movie called ‘Padosi’ in which Gajanan Jagirdar had acted as a Muslim and I’m not sure of the other actor, but he was a Muslim, and he’d acted as a Hindu! My father had told me that ‘Padosi’ had been a superb movie with a fantastic story!

Menonji,
I’m sorry, I didn’t understand your reply…was it shatrughan in “Ek mahal ho sapnon ka” ? Who said “hai ram ye kaisa jamana aya”? becuase of actors were playing other than thier own faith?
why compared “Padosi” and this film?
thanks..

derubala-ji, I’m so so sorry for leaving you totally confused. No, Shatrughan Sinha was one of the two heroes in ‘Aadmi Sadak Ka’.
After watching ‘Ek Mahal Ho Sapna Ka’, where Dharmendra’s ex lover marries an elderly widower. The widower’s daughter, Leena Chandavarkar falls in love with Dharmendra. The movie goers must have found this quite shocking and may have gasped. “Hai Ram! Ye kaisa zamana aaya!” Problem solved, derubala-ji? 🙂

Arun-ji, thank you for that valuable info.

Ravi has said in an interview that this was one song which he first got recorded in Kishore’s voice and then replaced it with Rafisaab.
What happened was that Ravi had himself prepared the tune keeping Rafisaab in mind as the singer. But Devendra Goel (producer/director) told Ravi that his children wanted Kishore to be the singer. Ravi had to oblige because he and Devendra Goel went back a long way. Ravi got his first independent break (Vachan) thanks to Devendra Goel.
Anyway Ravi recorded with Kishore-Lata. When Devendra Goel, as director, listened to the song (before the shooting), he somehow never felt it was as good as when Ravi had sung it while making the tune.
Ravi told him that he had had Rafisaab in mind at that time. So then Devendra Goel agreed that the song should be sung by Rafisaab. So it was re-recorded in the voices of Rafisaab and Lata Mangeshkar.
