Thanks to Arun ji for prodding the memory cells. Here is another wonderful melody from the film ‘Light House’ (1958). This time around, it is a song of exuberance, executed in a very fast tempo. It is the same team that has given two melancholic gems, “Tang Aa Chuke Hain Kashmakash-e-Zindagi Se Hum” and “Kis Jagah Jaayen Kis Ko Dikhlaayen” – lyrics from the pen of Sahir Ludhianvi, music under the stewardship of N Dutta, and the wonderful rendition by Asha Bhosle.

“Pyaasa” (1957) is a movie which touched the heart strings of the movie goers. It is the story of an artist who does not get his due in his life time but rich tributes are paid to him when he is presumed dead. But when he re appears again among his admirers, people who benefitted from his “death” are discomfited.

If I send the lyrics of the song “wo ham se chup hain, ham unse chup hain”, for discussion, Atul may, probably send me a return e-mail saying that this song has already been discussed and here is the link – https://atulsongaday.me/2010/01/28/wo-hamse-chup-hain-ham-unse-chup-hain/ unless he reads the entire lyrics. This was exactly what had happened to me whenever I read the first line of the mukhda appearing as a caption of an audio clip on YT. Unfortunately, I did not proceed further than a cursory glance assuming that this was the song from “Sargam” (1950).

A gem of a soft romantic duet. ‘Mere Armaan Mere Sapne’ is a somewhat better remembered film from early sixties (1963). Produced under the banner of Lalit Kala Mandir, Bombay, this film is directed by Arvind Soni. The lyrics for this film are penned by Rajendra Krishan, and the wonderful compositions are by N Dutta. The film has a good star cast that includes Pradeep Kumar, Jaishree Gadkar, Aseem Kumar, Kumari Naaz, Sumitra Devi, Pran, Asit Sen, Agha, Manmohan Krishan, Badri Prasad, Johnny Whisky, Paul Mahendra, Padma Devi, Paro Devi, Samar Chatterjee etc.

January 16th is the birth anniversary of Omkar Prasad Nayyar (O P Nayyar), one of the most prolific music director of Hindi film industry of the golden era of 50s and 60s. Although O P Nayyar did not receive any formal training in classical music, his folk tune based compositions became a rage among all the sections of the public. That he was one of the top music directors of the golden era of 50s and 60s without Lata Mangeshkar singing a single song for him, speaks volumes about his talent and calibre as a music director. He won Filmfare award for the best music director for Naya Daur (1957).
