“Gautam Govinda” (1979) was a Subhash Ghai movie. If one is not aware of this fact, one may mistake this movie for a Manmohan Desai movie dealing with separated at childhood brothers. The only thing different from a Manmohan Desai movie and this movie is that instead of Amitabh Bachchan, this movie has Shatrughan Sinha playing the law breaking brother. Shashi Kapoor is there in the movie, as usual playing a police inspector.

August 19th is the 36th death anniversary of the Sahitya Akademy Award winner for Urdu poetry and Hindi film lyricist Jan Nisar Akhtar. In his last birth anniversary on February 14th, I had covered his profile while discussing the song main abhi ghair hoon penned by him. Suffice it to say here that such a talented Urdu poet born in the family of Urdu scholars and poets was not as successful as a lyricist as his contemporaries like Majrooh Sultanpuri, Sahir Ludhianvi and Shakeel Badayuni. From what I gathered from various websites, he appeared to be surviving more on his shayaris than from writing songs for Hindi films. He was wellknown for his repartee through his shers (couplets). During his filmy career of over two decades, he wrote only around 150 songs for the Hindi films.

Today, the 18th of August, is the 76th birthday of Gulzar saab.
And, as I type 76th, I can’t help feeling that 1936 must have been a very special year. If I were selling wine and comparing Hindi film personalities with wine, I think I’d say 1936 could be right up there for best year for vintage wine of the 20th century. 🙂

On the occasion of Gulzar’s birthday today (18 august), we are discussing a few songs penned by him. He has written so many great songs in Hindi movies that we are spoiled for choice. Gulzar is one of those lyricists who has not yet reached his individual century of songs in the blog. Hopefully he will reach there in a few weeks time.

I came across this beautiful unknown song just today. It is from the movie Sautela Bhai starring Guru Dutt and Raaj Kumar. The beautiful song is set to music by Anil Biswas and the peppy lyrics are by Shailendra. There is almost a mathematical precision to the way the song is arranged, the singers and the chorus sing in a set pattern, after listening to one paragraph you know exactly who is going to sing the refrain, and when the chorus is going to repeat lines. Such patterns are usual in good poetry, and it enhances the rhythm of this song too. A special word for fantastic singing by Manna Dey and Meena Kapoor. Meena’s voice sounds so rich and full, like Geeta Dutt’s. She complements Manna Dey’s amazing voice perfectly.
