Hullo Atuldom

Smita Patil (17th October 1955-13th December 1986) was an unusual actor much in the same template as Shabana Azmi if one may say so. She did justice to all the characters she was offered. One can distinctly remember her act in “Arth” as a person who was obsessed and insecure about her lover. Or her simply -being a prop-for-the-hero role in movies like Shakti, Namak Halal, Badle Ki Aag, Ghungroo etc. And we cannot forget her movies like Ardh Satya, Bazaar, Mirch Masala, Bhumika, Bhavani Bhavai, Umbartha (the last two movies mentioned were dubbed from Gujarati & Marathi respectively.) Umbartha was Subah in Hindi.

After a long gap-a very long gap really-I am discussing a song from a Mythological film- Ayodhyapati-56.

This song is sung by Hemant Kumar- who had actually specialised in singing such songs in the decade of 1950s. This decade was a Golden period for Religious films, because as many as 124 Religious, Mythological and devotional films were released in the decade from 1950 to 1959. This worked out to an average of one such film released in every month for 120 months, that is 10 years, continuously. Some of the best Bhajans of Hemant Kumar are from this decade only.

“Asli Naqli” that was released in 1986 was directed by Sudarshan Nag. It had a star cast of Shatrughan Sinha- Anita Raaj- Raadhika- Rajnikanth- Amrish Puri- Shakti Kapoor -Ashok Kumar. It had a normal storyline wherein as boy is separated from his wealthy parents in childhood. His parents have only one clue of him- a locket that he is wearing. Upon his father’s death the mother embarks on a mission to trace out her long-lost son with the help of (typically named) Durjan Singh (Amrish Puri). Durjan Singh and his son Shakti Singh (Shakti Kapoor) plant Birju ustaad (Rajnikanth) as the son with the sole motive of plundering the wealthy widow. Then Shatrughan Sinha steps-in and the plot spices up. Further the ladies are there for the song and dance routines. Essentially what this movie had was two superstars with stylised acting and the public had a paisa-vasool feeling. It had a decent run at the box-office.
